AKRON, Ohio – Peyton Scott and
Kelly McLaughlin combined for 49 points, but it wasn't enough as the Miami University women's basketball dropped an 84-77 decision on Saturday afternoon to the Akron Zips.
The loss drops Miami to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in MAC play, while Akron improves to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
How It Happened:
- Scott had six points and Jada Duckett added five in the first quarter as the RedHawks led the Zips 17-13 after 10 minutes of play.
- McLaughlin had 10 points in the second quarter, including a jumper with 30 seconds left in the first half as Miami took a 38-36 advantage into the locker room. In all, McLaughlin, Scott and Duckett combined for 33 of Miami's 38 first half points.
- Akron garnered their largest lead of the game following a three pointer to go up 49-44 with 3:20 to play. Scott scored the next five points, including a three-point play and a fade-away baseline jumper to knot the score at 49-49 with two minutes to play in the third quarter.
- The Zips scored the final seven points of the quarter and led 56-49.
- A McLaughlin layup cut Akron's lead to 58-57 with 6:11 to go before the Zips went on a 7-0 to extend their lead to 65-57 with 4:45 to go.
- Kenzie Schmitz drilled a corner triple to cut Akron's lead to 80-77 with 25 second to go but Miami could get no closer.
Game Notes:
- McLaughlin established a new career-best with 27 points
- Duckett had a career high nine points and four rebounds.
- Miami recorded a season high 11 steals and 16 assists.
