OXFORD, Ohio — With a game that ended in an explosive third period, the Bulldogs from Duluth were the ones that found themselves on top, as the Miami University ice hockey team fell, 6-3, on Saturday night in Oxford.
The visitors scored a pair of goals to open up the game, scoring in the first, but the RedHawks were finally able to get on the board in the first period with a goal from Derek Daschke. Casey Gilling got his first goal of the season to go along with Daschke's goal, but Duluth continued to respond and sealed the victory. With the loss, the RedHawks continue the season with a record of 4-12-2-0-1-0, while Duluth continues their campaign at 10-5-2-1-1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 5:21 1st (UMD 1-0) | Like the previous night, Duluth was the first on the board. The Bulldogs found a chance to take an early 1-0 lead on a man-advantage. Jackson Cates found the back of the net on a nice tic-tac-toe set up from Kobe Roth and Koby Bender, who set up Cates.
- 14:20 1st (UMD 2-0) | On their third power-play opportunity of the game, Duluth was able to extend their lead to two goals after Nick Swaney sent home a wrist shot from the point that got by Miami netminder Ben Kraws. Swaney was set up by a pass from Duluth defenseman Wyatt Kaiser who found the open Swaney at the top of the zone.
- 1:57 2nd (UMD 3-0) | Early on in the second period, Duluth struck again as Quinn Olson scored after recovering his rebound. Swaney carried the puck into the zone and sent it over to Olson, who rang it off the pipe and then tapped it in for Duluth's third goal.
- 5:14 2nd (Miami 3-1) | Miami got on the board during a power-play after John Sladic redirected a shot from defenseman Derek Daschke. Miami forward Casey Gilling found an open Daschke on the point who sent the wrist shot on net that Sladic redirected for the goal.
- 5:54 3rd (UMD 4-1) | Duluth extended its lead once again, making it 4-1, after a goal from forward Luke Loheit. Forward Blake Biondi carried it into the zone before sending it out to Matt Cairns, who fired a shot on net that Loheit put home for the Duluth goal.
- 6:30 3rd (Miami 4-2) | Miami cut the deficit to two goals after Gilling scored on a wrist shot from just in front of the net. Miami forward Jack Olmstead picked up an assist after knocking the puck to defenseman Hampus Rydqvist who set up Gilling in front of the net for the goal.
- 12:27 3rd (UMD 5-2) | Duluth found a way to score again; this time, Cole Koepke knocked a puck home after Kraws thought he had it covered. Duluth forward Tanner Laderoute carried the puck into the zone before firing it on the net. The rebound was scooped up by Jacques, who sent it back out front to Koepke.
- 16:21 3rd (Miami 5-3) | Miami brought it back to within two goals after forward Matthew Barbolini found the back of the net on a RedHawks five-on-three opportunity. Forward John Sladic set up Derek Daschke, who fired home a shot from the point, leaving the rebound for Barbolini to knock home.
- 19:55 3rd (UMD 6-3) | Duluth forward Cole Koepke scored an empty-net goal in the waning seconds of regulation.
GAME NOTES:
- Miami outshot the Bulldogs by a 35-32 margin on the night. Olmstead led the RedHawks with individual shots on goal, with four.
- Blocked shots were closely contested all night, but the Bulldogs had the advantage in the end, with ten to Miami's nine.
- Both teams had two power-play goals each, with Miami going two-for-five on the man-advantage.
