OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University ice hockey team battled but ultimately came up short in the first of a weekend series against No. 6/6 Minnesota Duluth. The RedHawks were defeated 2-1 on Friday night at Goggin Ice Arena.
The first period ended with a goal in the final seconds of the frame from the visitors. Miami and Duluth both had power-play chances, but neither team could capitalize on the man advantage. The night also saw success for Miami's rookies, with freshman forward Michael Holland getting the first goal of his career, with an assist from fellow freshman Robby Drazner. Both goaltenders had strong showings in Oxford, with Ludvig Persson saving 25 shots faced by the dynamic Bulldog squad. In contrast, Ryan Fanti from Minnesota Duluth saved 14 for an excellent performance on the other end. With the loss, the RedHawks fall to 4-11-2-0-1-0 on the season, while the Bulldogs continue their season at 9-5-2-1-1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 19:49 1st (UMD 1-0) | In the closing seconds of the opening frame, both teams were eager to get on the board to have the advantage. Jesse Jacques passed the puck from across the slot, Cole Koepke opened up and found the back of the net with just 11 seconds left on the clock.
- 13:52 2nd (UMD 2-0) | A little over halfway through the middle period, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize once again. Noah Cates was able to find an open Quinn Olson, who was creeping in the backdoor. Olson opened himself up and roofed it in for the second Duluth goal of the game.
- 16:17 3rd (Miami 2-1) Late in the third period, Miami climbed within one of Duluth. Michael Holland scored the goal after finding a loose rebound for his first career goal in a RedHawks uniform.
GAME NOTES:
- The Bulldogs outshot the RedHawks by a 27-15 margin. Drazner and Scott Corbett both led the RedHawks with individual shots on goal, with three each.
- Miami went five-for-five on the penalty kill.
- Blocked shots were close among the two teams, with the statistic ending with a 12-11 margin in the Bulldogs' favor.

The RedHawks continue the 2021 portion of the schedule with another game in the series against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Puck drop for the second game of the series on Jan. 30 is scheduled for a 5 p.m. puck drop at Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford.
