OXFORD, Ohio - A pair of strong pitching performances led the Miami University baseball team to a 5-1 victory over Penn State on Thursday. The RedHawks improve to 8-7, while the Nittany Lions fall to 10-5.
Junior pitcher Jacob Webb picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Miami. The right-hander went four innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing no walks and striking out six. Sophomore pitcher Tyler Bosma started the ballgame and threw five scoreless innings allowing only five hits and striking out four.
Senior first baseman Charlie Harrigan had a big day, finishing 3-for-3 with one run scored to lead the RedHawks. Miami out-hit the Nittany Lions at a 10-6 clip.
The game remained scoreless through the first five innings. After Penn State broke the tie with a solo home run in the top of the sixth, senior right fielder Landon Stephens blasted a three-run shot over the left field wall to give Miami a 3-1 advantage.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh junior center fielder Parker Massman doubled to left field. A single by senior left fielder Kyle Winkler moved him up to third. Senior second baseman Will Vogelgesang made it 4-1 by bringing Massman home on a squeeze bunt.
In the bottom of the eighth, a triple from junior shortstop Tyler Wardwell scored Harrigan and completed Miami's scoring.
Winkler finished the game 2-for-4 with one run scored. Stephens was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored.
With the announcement from the MAC of the updated policies due to the COVID-19, this is the final game of the 2020 season.
