Ryan Larkin posted his second-straight shutout victory as Miami picked up a series sweep of Omaha.
OXFORD, Ohio – In its final home game of the season, Miami hockey sent its seniors out on a high note with a dominant 4-0 win over Omaha on Saturday night.
The RedHawks (8-19-5, 5-14-3-2 National Collegiate Hockey) picked up their first NCHC series sweep since doing so to St. Cloud State on Jan. 6-7, 2017.
After Friday's shutout win, Miami came out firing in the early going of the finale, recording the first five shots on goal over the first five minutes and change. That effort was aided by an early power play opportunity that Omaha (13-16-5, 7-12-3-0 NCHC) managed to kill off.
Shots eventually reached 8-0 in the Red & White's favor before the Mavericks recorded their first shot, a routine wrist shot from the neutral zone. Dogged effort by MU in the offensive zone drew another UNO penalty with 8:23 left in the first. The Mavericks were able to kill off that man advantage as well as the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes despite the RedHawks' 19-5 shot advantage.
Omaha ended up outshooting Miami 13-9 in the middle frame, though it was MU that found the net in the second. Grant Frederic got things started at the back end of some excellent work in tight spaces by Karch Bachman and Gordie Green, who managed to keep play alive before feeding Frederic at the right point. His slapshot hit a Maverick skate behind Isaiah Saville and deflected in for his second goal of the season.
After UNO got called for too many men on the ice, MU extended its lead on the ensuing faceoff with the power play. Matt Barry reached around an Omaha defenseman to get the puck to Casey Gilling in the right circle. While Saville stopped his in close shot, Ryan Savage sprawled and reached from the ice to knock home the rebound for his seventh of the year, making it a 2-0 contest with 14:16 left in the middle stanza.
Omaha went on its first power play of its night with 11:13 left in the second and pressured throughout. That man advantage eventually turned into a 5-on-3, but the penalty kill unit remained strong and keep UNO off the board to maintain its two-goal bulge through two periods.
The Mavericks went on a power play 2:50 into the third period, but the RedHawks' penalty kill remained strong and kept their two-goal lead intact.
Shortly after killing off that minor penalty, the RedHawks extended their lead on a weird play. After a Bachman shot went wide, Casey Gilling corralled the puck at the right point and his shot hit an Omaha skate and redirected past Saville for Gilling's ninth goal of the year. Rourke Russell also earned an assist on the tally that made it 3-0 with 14:10 to play.
Miami capped the scoring with 11:27 left on a brilliant breakout sequence. Gilling got the puck at the right wing wall in the neutral zone and fed Bachman in stride for a partial breakaway. While Saville stopped his bid, Green pounced on the rebound and knocked it home for his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
The RedHawks outshot the Mavericks 40-29 on the night and went 1-for-5 on the power play while killing all three UNO man advantages. Larkin made 29 saves for his second-straight shutout and third of the season while Gilling (1g, 2a), Bachman (3a) and Green (1g, 1a) had multi-point nights.
MU wraps up its regular season next weekend with a series at Western Michigan. Opening faceoff is at 7:05 p.m.
