Baseball Earns 7-3 Win Over Purdue Fort Wayne Saturday

OXFORD, Ohio-- The Miami University baseball took a 4-1 lead in the third inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 7-3 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday. The RedHawks improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Mastodons fall to 3-3.

Sophomore pitcher Tyler Bosma got the win for Miami. The southpaw went five innings, giving up three runs, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out six. Junior pitcher Jacob Webb shut down the door from there, going four shutout innings while allowing four hits and striking out four to earn his first career save.

At the plate, the RedHawks were led by senior second baseman Will Vogelgesang, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman designated hitter Stephen Krause put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-2 with his first career home run, two walks and two RBIs. Senior Charlie Harrigan also helped out for Miami, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding two RBIs.

Trailing 1-0, the RedHawks first put runs on the board in the first inning. Miami got an RBI single from Harrigan, scoring senior right fielder Landon Stephens from second base.

The game remained tied until the third inning, when the RedHawks got going again on offense.  Miami scored three times, with an output that included home runs from both Vogelgesang and Krause, which brought the RedHawks lead to 4-1.

Purdue Fort Wayne narrowed Miami's lead to 4-3 before the RedHawks stretched the advantage to 6-3 in the fifth inning.  With Stephens and Krause on base, a single from Harrigan scored Stephens. Krause came home on a RBI groundout by junior shortstop Tyler Wardwell.

Miami scored once more on an RBI single off the bat of Vogelgesang in the bottom of the sixth, as junior left fielder Parker Massman came home to make it 7-3 and complete the scoring for the day.

The RedHawks will look to complete the sweep of the Mastodons on Sunday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
