OMAHA, Neb. — The RedHawks didn't allow any goals in the first and third frames of action, but the Mavericks found the game-winner within seconds of overtime to get the 2-1 win over the Miami University ice hockey team in Omaha on Saturday evening.
Freshman goaltender Ludvig Persson played his first collegiate minutes in the conference matchup, making 26 saves against a dynamic Omaha squad. With the loss, the RedHawks fall to a 0-2-0 record on the young 2020-21 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 11:52 2nd (UNO 1-0) | After the RedHawks took a penalty for a tripping call, the Mavericks found the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock. Brandon Scanlin attempted a wrist shot from the center of the blue line, and Chayse Primeau deflected the shot on the power play to tip the puck in past Persson.
- 10:45 3rd (Miami 1-1) | After being scoreless for the first five periods of the season, the RedHawks were itching to get a goal on the score sheet. Ben Lown shot the puck from the right circle, and Scott Corbett caught the rebound in front to score and tie the game at one.
- 0:17 OT (UNO 2-1) | Joey Abate got the puck right off the face-off and gave it to an open Martin Sundberg, who sped through the Miami defense to score and give the Mavericks the win, less than a minute into overtime.
GAME NOTES:
- Omaha narrowly outshot Miami in shots on goal by a 29-27 margin. Junior defenseman Bray Crowder led the RedHawks in individual shots on goal, with seven.
- Persson saw success in his first taste of NCAA action, making 27 saves, including 14 in the first period alone to keep the Mavericks at bay in the first twenty minutes. The UNO goaltender, Isaiah Saville, made 15 saves in his first shutout of the season.
- Miami was the star of the face-off circle, going 37-24 on team face-offs on the day.
