Ice Hockey Topped by #3 Minnesota Duluth, 5-3

OMAHA, Neb. — The Miami University ice hockey team was defeated by the #3 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, 5-3, on Sunday night at Baxter Arena in Omaha.

The first period ended in a 2-2 tie. Sophomore goaltender Ben Kraws set aside 39 saves in the close conference battle, and Ryan Fanti tallied 26 saves. Miami's penalty kill unit went a perfect 3-3 in the matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 4:07 1st (UMD 1-0) | UMD forward gave the puck to Noah Cates with a no-look pass from center ice, and Cates proceeded to give the puck to an open Kobe Roth who scored from right in front to give the Bulldogs the lead four minutes in.
  • 4:18 1st (Miami 1-1) | Just eleven seconds after the opening goal from the Bulldogs, Miami decided they wanted to take matters into their own hands. Derek Daschke one-timed the shot from near the blue line, and the UMD goaltender stopped the puck. Monte Graham got his stick on the rebound in front, and got it in to tie the game at one.
  • 7:48 1st (Miami 2-1) | The RedHawks weren't done yet, and wanted to go in for their first lead of the season. John Sladic wristed a shot from the face-off circle, and Daschke crept in past the Bulldog defense to bury the rebound in to give Miami the lead.
  • 9:59 1st (UMD 2-2) | Minnesota Duluth scored the final goal of the first frame. Quinn Olson was left unmarked in front of Miami's goal. The Bulldogs cleared the puck from behind their net, and Cole Kopeke was the first one with the puck to give to Olson from near center-ice.
  • 3:08 2nd (UMD 3-2) | Luke Loheit wasted little time regaining the lead for his squad. The goal materialized on an odd-man rush, and Roth gave Loheit the puck. Loheit was waiting near the Miami net, and got the one-timer from the opposite corner past Kraws.
  • 9:26 2nd (UMD 4-2) | The puck got loose in front of the RedHawk net. Kopeke was able to steal the puck, and went open back door to knock in the rebound.
  • 14:44 2nd (Miami 4-3) | Senior forward Casey Gilling was able to get the puck behind the Bulldog crease, and was able to hit Bray Crowder with a perfect pass in front. Crowder one-timed the puck down the middle to pull Miami within one. Freshman forward Matthew Barbolini was credited with a secondary assist on the play, giving him his first collegiate point.
  • 19:14 3rd (UMD 5-3) | After Miami pulled the goaltender for a last-minute chance to tie the game, the Bulldogs forced a turnover and Roth was all alone in the Miami zone to score and empty net goal to guarantee the win for Duluth.

GAME NOTES:

  • After a tripping call on UMD, Jack Olmstead was awarded a penalty shot in the third period, but the shot was no good and the score was kept at 4-3.
  • The RedHawks were outshot by the Bulldogs on the day, by a 44-29 margin. Daschke led Miami in individual shots on goal, with seven. Gilling, Matt Barry, and Hampus Rydqvist weren't far behind, with five a piece.
  • Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play. Miami managed to kill 20 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage for Duluth.

WHAT'S NEXT:
