OMAHA, Neb. — Freshman goaltender Ludvig Persson made a career-high 38 saves as the Miami University hockey team continued the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Pod with a 1-1 tie and a shootout loss to Colorado College on Saturday evening.
The RedHawks were able to open up the scoring in the second period, with their second power-play goal on the season, after a tripping call against the Tigers. Both teams had a defense that couldn't be beaten, as both the first and third periods resulted in no goals, forcing the game into overtime. A shootout was necessary to determine the extra point, and the Colorado College goaltender didn't let in any of the RedHawk attempts to deny Miami the extra point in the conference standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 4:59 2nd (Miami 1-0) | Just 12 seconds into a power play, the RedHawks found themselves able to capitalize first. Casey Gilling gave Phil Knies the puck from the circle, and Knies attempted a wraparound goal but was unsuccessful. Matt Barry got his stick on the rebound and was able to find the back of the net to put Miami ahead first.
- 19:57 2nd (CC 1-1) | At the last minute, the second frame looked like it would end with Miami ahead, but the Tigers had other plans. Connor Mayer threw the puck on net from the blue line, and Grant Cruikshank stayed right in front for the rebound and buried it in past Persson.
- Neither team took advantage of the three-on-three overtime, with the game progressing to a shootout. Hunter McKown scored the deciding goal in the third round after each team had been stopped twice.
GAME NOTES:
- The Tigers outshot Miami on the night by a 39-21 tally. For the RedHawks, Andrew Sinard and Ryan Savage led in individual shots on goal, three each.
- The RedHawks had the advantage in blocked shots, as they blocked 19 as a team.
- Miami went 31-for-58 on face-offs on the night.
