RedHawks Drop 6-2 Decision to North Dakota

OMAHA, Neb. — Miami University ice hockey team was defeated by the #4/4 North Dakota Fighting Hawks, 6-2, on Sunday night at Baxter Arena.

The contest was back and forth offensively during the first half, with sophomore defenseman Jack Clement scoring his first goal of the season to deny a shutout for North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks were the top team in the end, scoring four unanswered goals to put them ahead in Omaha.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 4:54 1st (UND 1-0) | After getting called for a penalty, the RedHawks found themselves at a disadvantage. Grant Mismash of North Dakota found an open Jasper Weatherby. Weatherby skated the puck over to their offensive zone, where he was able to score low glove past Kraws on a right side rush.
  • 7:54 1st (Miami 1-1) | Exactly three minutes after North Dakota's goal, the RedHawks responded. Derek Daschke has the puck in the slot but didn't want to risk it and gave Clement a perfect feed. Clement jumped to the bottom of the left circle and had space to shoot a one-timer past Adam Scheel to tie the game going into the first intermission. Matthew Barbolini was credited with the secondary assist on Clement's first goal of the season.
  • 3:42 2nd (UND 2-1) | Jordan Kawaguchi makes a steal along the boards on the right side and gets the puck to teammate Griffin Ness. Ness was able to find Riese Gaber, who was coming up on the left side of the zone, and he got it in past Kraws.
  • 6:46 2nd (Miami 2-2) | After North Dakota had a chance in their offensive zone, they couldn't convert. Miami brings the puck the other way, and Barbolini launched a wrist shot from the left circle, and it went off the post to the back of the net to tie the game.
  • 8:28 2nd (UND 3-2) | Cooper Moore intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and was able to bring the puck the other way on a rush. He saw on open Gaber in the slot and made the pass for Gaber to laser his second of the game in the back of the net.
  • 11:52 2nd (UND 4-2) | Jacob Bernard-Docker got the puck right off the face-off, makes a backhand feed off the boards to Gaber, who was in front. Gaber wristed the puck toward Kraws, and Shane Pinto redirected Gaber's shot to give UND a 4-2 lead.
  • 16:08 2nd (UND 5-2) | Once North Dakota got to their end, the action didn't stop. Mismash and Ethan Frisch had great chances in front, but Kraws denied both of them. However, Mismash picked up the loose puck from the rebound, and fed Collin Adams the goal, and increased the UND lead to three to close out the second period.
  • 10:18 3rd (UND 6-2) | Mark Senden entered the zone on the right side and left the puck for Frisch, who was able to slap one just under the top of the goal to increase UND's lead.
