OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University men's basketball team begins a season-high three-game homestand on Tuesday as it welcomes Mid-American Conference leader Akron to Millett Hall. Tip time is at 7 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN+. An audio broadcast will be available on the Miami Sports Network from Van Wagner.
FAST STARTS: Miami has been getting off to fast starts in each of its past three games. Against Buffalo on Jan. 10, the RedHawks jumped to an 11-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest. In the win over Kent State on Jan. 14, Miami went ahead 11-3 five minutes into the game. Against Ball State last Saturday, it was 14-6 just past the five minute mark.
MAC 3-POINTERS: In Mid-American Conference play, the RedHawks have been on fire from behind the arc. Miami is 49-for-112 from three-point range in conference games, leading the MAC with a .438 shooting percentage. Miami's 9.80 three-pointers per game ranks third. Redshirt sophomore guard
Isaiah Coleman-Lands leads the 'Hawks with 13 triples in MAC play. He is currently shooting 50 percent (13-for-26) from three.
ABOUT AKRON: The Zips have been one of the strongest teams in the league this season. They are 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the MAC. In their last contest, they saw their five-game win streak come to an end as they fell on the road, 99-89, to Toledo last Saturday. That defensive performance was very uncharacteristic for Akron, as it only allows an average of 64.5 points per game. The Zips have four averaging in double figures, led by redshirt junior guard Loren Cristian Jackson. He is averaging 17.5 points per game. Senior forward Xeyrius Williams, a transfer from Dayton, nearly averages a double-double at 14.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest.
THE SERIES WITH THE ZIPS: Miami leads the all-time series with Akron, 32-31. The teams met three times last season, with the Zips winning two and the RedHawks taking one. On Jan. 19, 2019 in Oxford, Miami used a run midway through the second half to pull away and take a 68-61 victory.
Darrian Ringo led the 'Hawks with 16 points and nine assists. On Feb. 23, 2019 in Akron, Miami had a tough shooting night, while the Zips hit 11 three-pointers in a 70-58 victory.
Abdoulaye Harouna led the RedHawks with 13 points in that contest. The teams met one more time in the first round of the MAC Tournament on March 11, 2019 in Akron. Despite 25 points from
Nike Sibande, Miami fell into a deep hole early that it could not dig out of as the Zips took an 80-51 victory.
UP AHEAD: The homestand continues as Miami welcomes Eastern Michigan to Millett Hall on Saturday. Tip time is at 2 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN+. An audio broadcast will be available on the Miami Sports Network from Van Wagner. That game will feature the famous Frisbee Dogs at halftime, and includes a free clinic for youth grades 1-6 following the game (must preregister).
