Fast Start Not Enough as RedHawks Fall to No. 1 North Dakota

North Dakota scored twice in the final 1:04 to take the series.
The Fighting Hawks (18-2-3, 9-1-2-2 National Collegiate Hockey) take the weekend series with the victory.
Miami's (6-12-4, 3-7-2-1 NCHC) power play set the tone in the early going, netting two goals in as many chances before the game was 10 minutes old. The RedHawks worked the puck around the point and a seam came open at the left circle for Derek Daschke to wrist home his seventh goal of the year to stake MU to a 1-0 lead at the 7:16 mark. Casey Gilling and Gordie Green drew assists on the play.
Catching up on the action, this snipe by @derekdaschke put us on the board.

The Red and White struck on the power play again two minutes later. This time it was Phil Knies who poked a loose puck past Peter Thome for his third goal of the year. Gilling got his second point of the night by putting the initial shot on net while Rourke Russell also got a helper for keeping the play alive at the point.
This power play tally by @PKnies67 put us up a couple at the time.

That two-goal lead did not last long as Judd Caulfield capitalized off a neutral zone turnover 43 seconds later to put North Dakota on the board. UND outshot MU by a 17-7 count in the opening frame, but Miami's power play goals stood up at intermission.
A carryover power play for the Fighting Hawks allowed them to tie it up 20 seconds into the middle stanza as Shane Pinto converted a one-timer feed at the backdoor.
The RedHawks got another power play crack a couple minutes after that tying tally, but were unable to generate any shots during a scoreless two minutes of play. UND wound up going on two more power plays in the second, one of which came midway through the second where MU stymied the offensive play and even had a chance to regain the lead on a Gilling breakaway. That bid was stopped by Thome as the 2-2 tie wore on into the latter stages of the frame.
The Fighting Hawks threatened in their subsequent power play, with Ben Kraws being tested repeatedly and coming up big to keep the score tied up.
Penalty killed off thanks to stops like this from @benkraws!

A pair of UND penalties 54 seconds apart gave MU a golden opportunity to take another lead. While North Dakota got through the 5-on-3 portion unscathed, the RedHawks were able to work the puck for a backdoor slam by Karch Bachman before the Fighting Hawks could get organized and his eighth goal of the year made it a 3-2 game after 40 minutes. Green and Daschke each earned helpers on the tally.
Tic-tac-GOAL! Bachman finishes a beautiful passing display to put us up after 40 minutes.

Teams went back and forth for the first few minutes of the third, but UND eventually found its way to the tying goal when Jordan Kawaguchi gained the line, skated into the middle and picked a corner to make it 3-3 with 15:36 left.
North Dakota outshot Miami 9-6 in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but Kraws was sharp throughout. One particular play down the stretch saw the freshman netminder make a sliding stop to the right post.
Great sliding stop by @benkraws keeps us all even.

The Fighting Hawks got a power play with 5:49 remaining, but the RedHawks were able to keep things to the perimeter for the most part and kept the score tied into the latter stages of the period.
North Dakota put on pressure down the stretch and eventually got a redirect goal by Cole Smith with 1:04 to take its first lead of the night at 4-3. Miami gained the zone and pulled Kraws for an extra skater to press for a tying goal, but UND was able to clear the zone and clinch it on a Westin Michaud empty netter.
The Fighting Hawks outshot the RedHawks 36-22 on the night. MU's power play produced all of its offense, going 3-for-5 while UND finished 1-for-5 on the man advantage. Kraws finished the night with 31 saves in his first start since Nov. 30.
Miami continues its home stand next weekend when it starts a series with Denver at Steve 'Coach' Cady Arena. Opening faceoff on Friday night is at 7:05 p.m.
