OXFORD, Ohio – Western Michigan used a five-run seventh inning to down the Miami University baseball team, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks are now 35-14 overall and 14-8 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos are 17-28 overall and 10-11 in the MAC.
In the bottom of the first, junior shortstop
Will Vogelgesang led off and was hit by a pitch. He was able to steal second, which allowed junior second baseman
Landon Stephens to double him home and put Miami on the board.
The RedHawks got two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, redshirt junior left fielder
Kyle Winkler reached base on an error. With two outs, he stole second. A double down the left field line by sophomore center fielder
Parker Massman scored Winkler. Vogelgesang then singled to center field, scoring Massman and giving Miami a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, junior pitcher
Spencer Mraz was moving along, keeping WMU off the board through the fifth inning. He was only charged for one run in the top of the sixth when a leadoff single eventually came around to score. Mraz finished the game having allowed one run on six hits, while striking out six in 5.0 innings pitched.
The top of the seventh proved to be the difference as the Broncos scored five runs on four hits to take a 6-3 advantage. Miami was able to get a base runner in each of its final three innings, but was unable to mount a comeback.
Stephens finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI. Vogelgesang and Massman each had an RBI and a hit for the Red and White.
The rubber match between the RedHawks and Broncos is Sunday at 1 p.m. It is Senior Day, so prior to the game at 12:30, Miami's seven seniors,
