OXFORD, Ohio – A fantastically pitched outing by a pair of seniors led the Miami University baseball team to a 5-0 shutout victory over Western Michigan on Senior Day Sunday. The RedHawks improve to 36-14 overall and 15-8 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos are 17-29 overall and 10-12 in the MAC.
Senior pitcher
Jack Corbell gave up singles to the first two batters of the game. He then got out of the threat by retiring the next three in a row, the last two by strikeout. He proceeded to allow only two more hits the rest of the way as he threw eight innings in earning the victory. Corbell allowed 0 runs on four hits, while striking out five to improve his record to 5-2.
Senior pitcher
Andy Almquist quickly retired WMU in order in the top of the ninth, getting a pair of strikeouts.
The power of freshman designated hitter
Cole Andrews' bat got Miami on the board in the bottom of the second. After redshirt junior third baseman
Jordan Stephens drew a walk to lead off, Andrews hit a shot over the left field wall to make it 2-0.
In the bottom of the third, junior shortstop
Will Vogelgesang led off and was hit by a pitch. He then stole second. Redshirt freshman
Reid Norberg put down a perfect bunt that he beat out to first base with no throw and moved Vogelgesang to third. They each got an easy trip home however, as junior second baseman
Landon Stephens hit his sixth home run of the season over the left center field wall to make it 5-0. That will be all the offense Miami would need to secure the win.
Andrews finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. He was a double short of the cycle.
Landon Stephens was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Norberg finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Miami does not have a midweek game this coming week. The RedHawks conclude the regular season with a trip to Central Michigan for three-game series beginning Thursday. Thursday's contest starts at 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday's first pitches will each be at 1 p.m.
