TOLEDO, Ohio – It was a pitchers' duel on Saturday, but a two-run home run in the top of the seventh by sophomore right fielder
Parker Massman led the Miami University baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Toledo on Saturday. With their sixth straight win, the RedHawks improve to 24-5 overall and 7-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets fall to 9-17 overall and 0-6 in the MAC.
Junior pitcher
Spencer Mraz threw six solid innings for Miami. Toledo was only able to score two runs on him in the bottom of the second on a pair of bases loaded walks. Because of an error, neither of those runs was earned however. He gave up only four hits and struck out five. Junior left hander
Nick Urbantke came in and threw the next 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits. With the tying run at second base and the potential winning run at first in the bottom of the ninth and two outs, senior pitcher
Andy Almquist came in and got a foul out to third to end the threat and earn his fourth save of the season.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third, Massman led off with a walk. After an out was recorded, a single up the middle by sophomore center fielder
Cristian Tejada moved him to second. A groundout by junior shortstop
Will Vogelgesang moved Massman to third, while a passed ball allowed him to come home and cut the deficit to 2-1.
It stayed that way until the top of the seventh. With junior first baseman
Charlie Harrigan on first, Massman hit one to left center that carried over the wall for his first home run of the season, helping secure the victory for the RedHawks.
Massman finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Tejada also had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4.
Miami looks to finish off the series sweep against Toledo in the finale on Sunday.
Due to threat of inclement weather, first pitch has been moved to 11 a.m.. and it will air live on ESPN+.
