TOLEDO, Ohio – The Miami University baseball team battled in the late innings as it tried to complete a comeback attempt, but Toledo was able to salvage the last game of the series and end the RedHawks' six-game winning streak with a 7-5 victory. Miami is now 24-6 overall and 7-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets are 10-17 overall and 1-6 in the MAC.
Toledo opened scoring with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. Miami answered in the top of the second when a sacrifice fly by redshirt junior second baseman
Jordan Stephens scored freshman designated hitter
Cole Andrews. The Rockets answered with two in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Senior left fielder
Mackay Williams led off the top of the third with a single to left field. Sophomore center fielder
Cristian Tejada followed with his first career collegiate home run, a line shot over the left field wall that tied the score at three.
Toledo scored one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the seventh to build a 7-3 advantage.
Miami began a spirited comeback attempt in the top of the eighth. Andrews and junior catcher
Cal Elvers led off the inning with a pair of walks. After a strikeout, a walk to sophomore pinch hitter
Nate Stolze loaded the bases with one out. With two outs, junior
Colin Shepherd came to the plate to pinch hit. The Rockets' shortstop booted the ball on his grounder, allowing Andrews to score. Elvers then cut the deficit to 7-5 when he came home after the pitcher threw the ball away.
Toledo was able to retire the RedHawks in order in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.
Tejada finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Junior shortstop
Will Vogelgesang also had two hits for Miami.
The RedHawks return to action this week as they begin play at the 11th Annual Joe Nuxhall Classic. This year's tournament takes place at UC's Marge Schott Stadium. Miami opens play on Tuesday with a neutral site contest against Wright State at 3 p.m.
