OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University baseball team battled its way to its fourth straight victory with a 7-3 win over Northern Kentucky Wednesday evening. The RedHawks improve to 22-5 overall, while the Norse fall to 5-21.
Senior pitcher
Bailey Martin was solid on the mound, allowing only two runs on six hits in 7.1 innings pitched. He struck out four. Senior pitcher
Andy Almquist came on in relief in the bottom of the eighth with runners on second and third and one out and got a pair of strikeouts to limit any further damage on the way to his third save of the season.
The Norse struck first with a run in the top of the second. They kept the RedHawks off the board until the bottom of the third, when junior designated hitter
Colin Shepherd led off with a triple and sophomore center fielder
Cristian Tejada brought him home on a sacrifice fly.
Miami broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tejada led off with a walk. Junior shortstop
Will Vogelgesang hit a bunt single, while a walk from junior third baseman
Landon Stephens loaded the bases. After an out was recorded, a walk from senior right fielder
Mackay Williams forced home Tejada and put Miami in the lead. Another walk by junior second baseman scored Vogelgesang, while a sac fly from junior first baseman
Charlie Harrigan brought home
Landon Stephens and made it 4-1.
The RedHawks scored two more in the bottom of the sixth on a wild play. With Vogelgesang on second and
Landon Stephens on first, both took off and stole bases. The catcher missed the third baseman on the throw, which allowed Vogelgesang to score.
Landon Stephens continued to hustle and ended up scoring as well all the way from first base on the error to make it 6-1.
NKU got one back in the top of the eighth before Almquist came in to shut the door. In the bottom of the eighth after a single from redshirt freshman
Reid Norberg advanced Vogelgesang to third base, an error by the shortstop allowed Vogelgesang to come home. The Norse added one more in the ninth on an unearned run.
Vogelgesang finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored. He also had three stolen bases. As a team, the RedHawks finished with eight steals on the night.
Miami travels to Toledo this weekend for a three-game series. Friday's game begins at 3:05 p.m., while both Saturday and Sunday will start at 1:05 p.m. Each of the games will air on either ESPN+ or ESPN3.
