OXFORD, Ohio – Northern Illinois broke open a tight game late with 11 runs over the final three innings as it took the series finale over the Miami University baseball team, 13-3 on Sunday. The RedHawks are now 31-12 overall and 12-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskies are 14-29 overall and 10-8 in the MAC.
Northern Illinois struck for single runs in the second and third innings. Miami's bats were working early as they had scoring threats in each of the first three innings, but the RedHawks could not get the key hit that would bring the runs home.
With it still 2-0 in the top of the seventh, an error led to three runs for NIU that gave it a 5-0 advantage. Another error and five walks helped the Huskies put the game out of reach with six runs in the top of the eighth.
Miami got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Junior catcher Cal Elvers singled up the middle and was replaced by a pinch-runner, freshman Nickolas Stringer. Junior shortstop Colin Shepherd and sophomore center fielder Parker Massman each drew walks to load the basses with no one out. A single to right center by senior right fielder Mackay Williams scored Stringer and Shepherd. Massman would score on an RBI groundout by sophomore center fielder Cristian Tejada.
NIU would add two runs in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring.
Williams finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the RedHawks. Junior second baseman Landon Stephens was 2-for-4.
Miami has a pair of midweek games coming up. On Tuesday, the 'Hawks travel to Xavier for a 3 p.m. contest. The Red and White then welcome Ohio State to McKie Field at Hayden Park on Wednesday. First pitch is at 5 p.m. and it will air live on RedHawks All-Access for those who have a subscription.
