BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Miami tennis team advanced to the MAC Championship with a commanding win over the Ball State Cardinals in a semifinal Saturday morning. The regular season champion RedHawks (11-10, 6-1 MAC) await the Akron-Buffalo winner in tomorrow's title clash.
While Miami was able to squeak by BSU 4-3 in the team's regular season meeting, Saturday's match would be dominated by the RedHawks from start to finish. The doubles point went to MU to kick things off, after freshmen
Brindtha Ramasamy and
Jordan Ortega-Mendez won at first doubles and sophomores
Makenzie Myers and
Priyana Kalita won at third doubles.
The singles session would be over quickly, with Miami shutting the door and clinching via three two-set victories. First,
Melati Devi won a 6-2, 6-2 decision at fifth singles. After a close first set, MAC Newcomer of the Year
Brindtha Ramasamy then rolled through set number two 6-0 to increase the RedHawk lead to 3-0. The clincher then came from
Makenzie Myers on court six, who earned a 6-3, 6-3 win of her own.Â
Emily Struble,
Priyana Kalita, and Ortega-Mendez each held one-set leads of their own at the time of the clinch.
Full scores are listed below.
With that, Miami will advance to its second straight MAC Championship match, awaiting either the second-seeded Akron Zips or the defending champion Buffalo Bulls, the six seed. The title match will be played at noon on Sunday.
