The RedHawks set a school record in the event for the second time this year.
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The Miami University track and field team made its presence known on a national stage at the 125th edition of the Penn Relays Thursday and Saturday with a few big performances. In addition, several RedHawks competed at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Classic.
PENN RELAYS
The meet kicked off Thursday with a handful of events, with a major highlight coming in the women's 4x400 relay. After just having set a new school record a few weeks ago at Cincinnati's Nikoloff Invitational, Olivia Bechtel, Sarah Bruns, Kalliopi Kountouri, and Emily Hooker combined to set a new all-time Miami mark, running a 3:38.83. This placed them third in the preliminary round, behind only Duke and defending indoor champion South Carolina, and will advanced the 'Hawks to Saturday's championship run.
Moving on to Friday's events, Aaron Muresan started the day by taking a top-ten finish in the championship round of the men's 400m hurdles, posting a mark of 52.73. The same four runners from the women's 4x4 returned for the 4x200 relay, taking eighth in the championship section with a run of 1:37.76.
One of the men's relay squads also had a big showing, with Muresan, Mitchell Towne, Anthony Camerieri, and Sean Torpy putting up a 9:48.82 in the distance medley for a fourth-place finish. Over on the field, Kenny Glenn finished fourth in the long jump with a 7.25m mark.
JESSE OWENS CLASSIC
Meanwhile, several other RedHawks were in competition Friday at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Classic. Perhaps the top performance came from none other than Danielle Collier in the women's javelin, who won the event with a 50.12m throw. Collier has eclipsed the 50 meter mark in each of her events this season.
Several distance events also ran on Saturday, with several RedHawks putting up good numbers. In the showcase section of the men's 5000m, Alex Tam (15:01.77) and Ryan Sharkey (15:04.17) Â took third and fourth respectively. The women's section of the same event, Carly Davis grabbed fourth with a 17:34.51.
Results from both meets can be found at the links above.
The RedHawks will continue their campaigns at both Penn and Ohio State tomorrow with a full slate of events.
