RICHMOND, Ky. – The Miami University baseball team kept rolling with its 13th straight victory on Wednesday, an 8-4 decision at Eastern Kentucky. It ties for the second-longest win streak in school history. The RedHawks improve to 16-3 overall, while the Colonels fall to 11-10.
Junior third baseman
Landon Stephens got Miami on the board in the top of the first with his third home run of the year, a solo shot over the right field wall. Redshirt junior shortstop
Jordan Stephens made it 3-0 with his first career Miami home run, scoring sophomore catcher
Nate Stolze in the process.
In the top of the fourth, junior designated hitter
Cal Elvers led off with a double to center field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by junior first baseman
Charlie Harrigan.
Redshirt freshman second baseman
Reid Norberg made it 6-0 in favor of the RedHawks with his first career home run in the top of the fifth. Sophomore centerfielder
Cristian Tejada followed with a single up the middle. After a hit by pitch to redshirt junior left fielder
Kyle Winkler moved him to second, Tejada stole third. He then scored on a balk to make it 7-0.
In the top of the sixth, a sac fly from Norberg brought home Stolze to give Miami an eight-run cushion.
Senior pitcher
Bailey Martin was sharp from the start, keeping EKU without a hit until the fourth inning. He only gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth and earned his fourth victory of the season, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.
The Colonels pulled within six with a run in the bottom of the seventh and then scored two in the bottom of the eighth to make it 8-4. Eastern Kentucky had the bases loaded with two outs, but with the tying run at the plate, junior pitcher
Alex Stobert got the big strikeout to end its final threat.
Jordan Stephens finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Norberg was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored.
The RedHawks begin Mid-American Conference play this weekend as they travel to defending MAC Champion and preseason favorite Kent State. The game on Friday will begin at 4 p.m., on Saturday it will be at 3 p.m. and the series will conclude on Sunday with first pitch at 1 p.m.
