OXFORD, Ohio – Thanks to a two-out, two-run RBI single from junior second baseman Colin Shepherd in the bottom of the eighth, the Miami University baseball team completed the weekend sweep with a 5-3 victory over Oakland Saturday. The RedHawks improve to 7-3 overall, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 0-10.
Oakland struck first scoring one run in the top of the third off starting pitcher Jack Corbell. Senior pitcher Shane Smith came in relief in the top of the fourth and held the Golden Grizzlies scoreless over the next four innings, allowing only three hits and striking out four.
Miami was held hitless until the bottom of the fifth. That inning began when senior right fielder Mackay Williams was hit by a pitch. After he advanced to second on a groundout, Williams then advanced to third on an error by the shortstop. The RedHawks first hit of the game, a single by junior second baseman Colin Shepherd brought him home. Shepherd then stole second and was driven in by junior third baseman Landon Stephens' double.
In the bottom of the seventh, junior first baseman Charlie Harrigan singled home Shepherd to give Miami a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Oakland had runners on second and third with one out. A deep foul out to foul territory brought home one run on a sacrifice fly. The Grizzlies tied it at three with a triple that scored the other runner.
Junior catcher Cal Elvers doubled to left center to lead off the bottom of the eighth. One batter later, Williams reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, moving Elvers to third. A sac bunt by sophomore centerfielder Parker Massman put runners on second and third with two out. Shepherd then came through with a single up the middle to score both Elvers and Williams and make it 5-3.
Freshman pitcher Sam Bachman pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the victory for the RedHawks.
Shepherd finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Miami returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Xavier. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
