Miami Run Rules Dayton 8-0

The RedHawks beat the Flyers 8-0 in five innings to conclude the Miami Invitational.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team (12-10) run-ruled Dayton (9-14) by a 8-0 margin in five innings to wrap up the Miami Invitational on Sunday.

Taylor Rathe started the game in the circle for the RedHawks. Rathe pitched two innings, giving up no runs and only one hit while striking out one batter and walking one.

Brianna Pratt came into the game to relieve Rathe to start the third. Pratt finished the game, pitching three innings, giving up not runs on one hit while striking out one. Rathe and Pratt share the shutout.

Miami scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead after holding Dayton off the scoreboard in the top of the first. Morgan Lott led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk by Ashton Slone. Johniann Wahl hit an RBI single to score Lott and get Miami on the board. Jenny Vasquez is hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lily Wilmot reached base on a fielder's choice that scored Slone. Kara Leckinger hit an RBI single to score Wahl and increase Miami's lead to 3-0 after one inning.

The RedHawks increased their lead to 7-0 after two innings. Mackenzie Moore led off the inning with a single and scored on a triple by Lott, her fourth of the season. Lott is now tied for fifth in program history with four triples in a single season. Haeley Tran doubled to right center to score Lott and force Dayton to make a pitching change with nobody out as Miami held the 5-0 advantage. Wahl hit an RBI single followed by an RBI from Vasquez to add a pair before the inning ended.

Miami loaded the bases in the bottom of the third but could not score. Tran and Slone singled while Wahl was walked – all with two outs.

The RedHawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth as well, this time capitalizing to earn the win walk-off style as the game ended with the run rule in effect. Lott singled and beat out the throw to second. Slone and Wahl were intentionally walked to load the bases with two out. Vasquez ended the game with a walk-off single to score Lott.

Lott paced the Miami offense with three hits and three runs. Tran, Slone and Wahl each had two hits while Wahl and Vasquez had two RBI.
