OXFORD, Ohio – After giving up seven runs in the top of the first inning, the Miami University baseball team came storming back, scoring a season-high 18 runs in an 18-10 victory over St. Bonaventure to open the three-game weekend series on Friday. With their 10th straight win, the RedHawks improve to 13-3 overall. The Bonnies fall to 1-7.
Miami did not panic after St. Bonaventure jumped to a 7-0 lead after one-half inning. Freshman pitcher
Tyler Bosma came in to the contest in relief and completely settled the 'Hawks down to allow them to stage a comeback. He went 6.1 innings to earn the win, and allowed only two runs on six hits, while striking out a career-high 11.
The RedHawks quickly chipped away at the deficit with five runs in the bottom of the first. An infield single by freshman designated hitter
Cole Andrews scored redshirt junior left fielder
Kyle Winkler. A triple to deep right center by junior first baseman
Charlie Harrigan brought home Andrews and made it 2-0. Another infield single by junior catcher
Cal Elvers scored Harrigan. After senior right fielder
Mackay Williams reached on a bunt single, a double from redshirt junior shortstop
Jordan Stephens scored Elvers and Williams and cut the Bonnies' lead to 7-5.
Miami took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second. With one out, Winkler and junior third baseman
Landon Stephens each drew walks, while Andrews was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A single to right center by Harrigan scored Winkler and
Landon Stephens to tie the score. A base hit by Williams gave the RedHawks their first lead when Andrews came around to score. It became 9-7 when Harrigan ran home after a passed ball.
The Red and White got single runs in each of the next three innings. In the top of the third, sophomore centerfielder
Cristian Tejada stole both second and third. The St. Bonaventure catcher overthrew the third baseman, allowing Tejada to score.
In the bottom of the fourth, a single by
Jordan Stephens scored Harrigan. In the bottom of the fifth a single by Andrews brought home Winkler. In the bottom of the sixth, a triple by Tejada scored junior second baseman
Colin Shepherd. Tejada then made it 14-8 when he came home on a wild pitch.
The Bonnies scored single runs in the top of the seventh and eighth to pull within four at 14-10. Miami then put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. A squeeze bunt by Shepherd scored Williams. After
Jordan Stephens and Shepherd pulled off a double steal, a single through the right side by Tejada scored them both. Tejada stole two more bases to give him four on the night, only the third time since 2001 a RedHawk player has been able to accomplish that. After Winkler and
Landon Stephens each drew walks to load the bases, an RBI groudout by Andrews scored Tejada and completed the scoring for the contest.
Tejada finished the game 3-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Andrews was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Harrigan was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Jordan Stephens finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Williams was 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.
As a team, the RedHawks had nine stolen bases, only one short of the school record of 10 set last year on March 11, 2018 against Northern Kentucky.
Miami continues its series against St. Bonaventure on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
