OXFORD, Ohio – Junior third baseman
Landon Stephens' walk-off ground-rule double in the bottom of the ninth finished off a 7-6 come-from-behind victory for the Miami University baseball team over St. Bonaventure Saturday. With their 11th straight victory, the RedHawks improve to 14-3. The Bonnies fall to 1-8.
The teams traded runs throughout the contest, with each team scoring two runs in a frame until the final inning. It started in the top of the first when St. Bonaventure scored two runs off of Miami starting pitcher, junior
Spencer Mraz.
The RedHawks rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. With one out, senior left fielder
Mackay Williams drew a walk.
Landon Stephens then hit a shot to the left center wall which allowed Williams to score. After freshman designated player
Cole Andrews was hit by a pitch and sophomore catcher
Nate Stolze drew a walk to load the bases, sophomore right fielder
Parker Massman was plunked to force home Stephens and tie the score at two.
The Bonnies got two more in the top of the second, but again the Red and White fought right back in the bottom of the frame. With one out, sophomore centerfielder
Cristian Tejada got an infield single to third. Williams followed with a single through the right side. A double to right center by
Landon Stephens scored Tejada. After Andrews walked to load the bases, a groundout by junior first baseman
Charlie Harrigan brought home Williams and made it 4-4.
It remained that way until SBU put up two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Senior pitcher
Shane Smith came into the game in the top of the sixth in relief and proceeded to strike out the side. That proved to be a sign of things to come as he would allow the Bonnies only one hit over the final four innings in earning the victory, while striking out nine batters.
With Smith dominating on the mound, Miami was able to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh. Stolze led off with a single, while Massman drew a walk. Redshirt junior shortstop
Jordan Stephens moved them each up a base on a sacrifice bunt. A groundout by junior second baseman
Colin Shepherd brought home Stolze. Tejada followed with an infield single that scored Massman and made it 6-6.
In the bottom of the ninth, Shepherd led off with a walk. Tejada then reach on an error. The Bonnies were able to retire the lead runner on the bunt attempt, which brought up
Landon Stephens with runners on first and second and one out. After a lengthy at-bat featuring several foul balls, he lined a shot to deep left center that took one bounce and went over the fence, scoring Shepherd and giving the RedHawks a 7-6 win.
Landon Stephens finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored. Tejada, Williams and Stolze each had two hits for Miami.
The RedHawks will look to complete a sweep when they conclude the series with St. Bonaventure on Sunday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
