
Miami Splits Final Day in Carbondale

The RedHawks beat Green Bay before narrowly losing to Iowa.
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Miami University softball team (10-7) split the final day of the SIU Tournament on Sunday. In the first game, Miami controlled the game against Green Bay, winning by a 6-1 margin. The RedHawks narrowly lost a 1-2 game against Iowa.
Miami 6, Green Bay 1
Brianna Pratt made the start in the circle for the RedHawks. Pratt gave up no runs during four innings of work. She struck out five batters and walked none, giving up only one hit. Taylor Rathe replaced Pratt to start the fifth inning. Rathe finished the game, giving up one run on one hit and striking out three.
Miami scored three in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. Morgan Lott hit the lead-off single and stole second. Jenny Vasquez hit a double that would score Lott. Ashton Slone hit one over the fence to give the RedHawks a 3-0 lead. Jada Dotson hit a double but would be stranded on base.
The score would remain 3-0 until the third inning. Pratt forced Green Bay to go three up, three down, including two strikeouts to maintain the shutout before Miami's offense added three runs to make it a 6-0 ball game in the bottom of the third. It started with walks from Vasquez and Slone. Johniann Wahl drove in two runs with a double but would be tagged out at third trying to stretch the play to a triple. Dotson sent a solo shot over the fence to cap the inning's scoring.
Miami loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but we unable to increase the lead. Zoe Bishop walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Julia Kennedy also walked. A single from Adriana Barlow advanced both runners but that is where they'd finish the inning.
Slone and Dotson hit home runs for the RedHawks. Slone and Wahl each had two RBI's. Seven different players had a hit.
Miami 1, Iowa 2
Courtney Vierstra pitched the entire game in the circle for the RedHawks. She struck out six batters and walked none, only giving up five hits.
Lott led off the game with a double and Wahl walked in the first inning to put runners on first and second but Miami could not score. Vierstra went three up, three down in the bottom of the first.
Both teams only saw three batters to the plate during the second inning with Vierstra striking out the side in the bottom half.
Miami struck first, scoring once in the top of the third inning. Lott had her second hit of the game, a single, and advanced to second on a single from Slone. Wahl blasted a double to bring Lott home. With that RBI, Wahl became Miami's all-time leader in RBI's with 115 in her career.
Iowa tied the game at one in the bottom of the fourth on its first two hits of the game, a single followed by a double.
The RedHawks loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning but could not take the lead. Slone led-off the inning with a single, followed by another walk by Wahl. Haeley Tran hit a one-out single but the runners were stranded on base.
Iowa scored in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of singles and a stolen base.
Slone and Lott led the RedHawks offense with two hits each. Wahl had the lone RBI on top of a pair of walks.

Miami travels to Lexington on Tuesday for a game against Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
