RedHawks Snap Skid With 4-2 Win Over Omaha

Four different goalscorers lead Miami to a Saturday night win.

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University hockey team picked up a 4-2 win on Saturday night over Omaha inside Steve "Coach" Cady Arena. The win snaps a 15-game winless streak dating back to Nov. 17.

Miami improves to 10-16-4 overall with the win and 4-12-2-1 in NCHC play. Omaha slips to 9-17-2 (5-12-1-1).

The RedHawks finished the contest with 26 shots, while the Mavericks recorded 35 shots on net. Miami goaltender tallied 33 saves to earn the win, while senior Josh Melnick and freshman Scott Corbett each notched a goal and an assist. Gordie Green added a trio of assits.

Miami took an early 1-0 advantage as Melnick found Derek Daschke open in the left circle for a wrister that snuck past the Omaha goaltender. Green also picked up an assist on Daschke's sixth goal of the year at the 7:50 mark of the first period.

Just 19 seconds later Miami looked to have extended its lead to 2-0 when Phil Knies picked up a rebound and poked it into the back of the net before the goal was waived off due to goaltender interference.

A few minutes later Knies grabbed a rebound off a blast from Casey Gilling from the point and this time it counted. Corbett added an assist at the 11:06 mark of the first period.

The Mavericks came out buzzing to start the second period, recording five shots in the first six minutes, but Ryan Larkin was there to deny them all.

Corbett put the 'Hawks up 3-0 midway through the second period with his fifth goal of the season. The freshman took a feed from Green at the left circle and fired a wrist shot past Omaha's Evan Weninger at the 9:35 mark. Andrew Sinard picked up his first career point on the Corbett goal.

The Mavericks answered back quickly, scoring a pair of goals in the next five minutes of play.

Neither team could get much going to start the third. Miami's first good scoring chance came midway through the final period when Knies soared down the left side and found Christian Mohs for a backhanded attempt that brushed the right leg pad of Weninger.

The RedHawks added some breathing room a few minutes later when Melnick took a pass from Green in the slot and blasted into the back of the net for a 4-2 Miami lead.

Miami is off next weekend before traveling to face Denver on Feb. 22-23.
