This marks the third school record in the last two weeks.
ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Miami University track and field team completed the first half of Grand Valley State's Big Meet Friday, highlighted by a record-setting run from senior Kalliopi Kountouri in the 600m.Â
Kountouri put together a 1:30.93 run in the 600, breaking Emily Hooker's record of 1:31.26 set during last year's Mid-American Conference Championship. This earned Kountouri a second-place finish in the 39-runner field. Another second came from last week's record setter in junior Olivia Bechtel, who ran a 24:48 in the 200m. Bechtel broke the school's 400m mark last weekend.
The 400m this weekend was run by Hooker, who earned a top-five place with a 56.09 run. Miami's 4x400 team, consisting of Hooker, Kountouri, Faith Baxter, and Sarah Bruns ran a 3:44.49 to finish second out of fifteen teams - the third straight meet that the 4x400 squad has taken a top-two spot. Elsewhere, Miami got a trio of personal records in the 5000m from Emma Mashburn, Maegan Murphy, and Regan Smith; all five RedHawk athletes in that event placed in the top-50 of the 146-runner line-up. McKenna Fry and Katie Vitou each set PRs in the 3000m, while Sydney Jefferson (weight throw) and Emily Fletchall (pole vault) did the same on the field. Also in the day's field events, Katie Walker took a top-five in the shot put.
The men's team featured another finals appearance for Aaron Muresan in the 60m hurdles, who ran a 8:06 to finish sixth. Sean Torpy, who broke Miami's mile record at Notre Dame last weekend, wasn't quite able to break his own mark, but he did pace the entire 58-runner field in Friday's mile with a 4:04.97 time. Another strong finish from the men came from Kenny Glenn in the long jump.
The day's full results are above.
Miami will be back in action tomorrow to conclude festivities at GVSU.
