Omaha Gets Past Miami, 3-0

RedHawks outshoot Mavericks 38-21

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University hockey team had several strong scoring opportunities as it controlled played for large portions of the game, but Omaha goaltender Evan Weninger made 38 saves as the Mavericks took a 3-0 victory Friday to open the series.

Miami falls to 9-16-4 (3-12-2-1 National Collegiate Hockey), while Omaha improves to 9-16-2 (5-11-1-1 NCHC).

After a scoreless first period, the Mavericks got on the board with a power play goal at the 6:10 mark of the second frame. A RedHawk turnover led to Ryan Galt finding Teemu Pulkkinen to make it 1-0 in favor of Omaha.

It remained that way until 4:21 into the third period. Kevin Conley sent the puck up ice to Galt. Galt sent a cross ice pass to John Shuldt, whose one-time attempt was saved by Miami goalie Ryan Larkin. Galt was able to clean up the rebound to give the Mavericks a two-goal advantage. Mason Morelli finished off the 3-0 win with an empty net goal with 27 seconds to go.

The RedHawks outshot Omaha, 38-21 overall. Karch Bachman led Miami with seven shots on goal. The Mavericks finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while the RedHawks were 0-for-3. Larkin finished with 18 saves.

Miami completes its series with Omaha on Saturday inside Steve "Coach" Cady Arena. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m. and it will air live on NCHC.tv.
