Men's Basketball Falls to Akron, 70-58

AKRON, Ohio – The Miami University men's basketball team could not overcome a tough shooting night and 11 three-point makes from Akron as the Zips took a 70-58 win Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks are now 14-13 overall and 6-8 in the Mid-American Conference. Akron is 15-12 overall and 7-7 in the MAC.

Senior guard Abdoulaye Harouna led Miami with 13 points, while senior guard Darrian Ringo had 12 points and four assists. The RedHawks finished the game shooting 20-for-61 (32.8 percent), including 4-for-22 (18.2 percent) from three-point range while Akron was 24-for-51 (47.1 percent) overall and 11-for-25 (44.0 percent) from behind the arc.

Ringo took the opening tip and drove in for a layup, however the Zips went on a 6-0 run to go in front, 6-2. Redshirt senior forward Aleks Abrams had a pair of layups, completing an old-fashioned three-point play to pull Miami within one at 12-11 at the 13:02 mark. Ringo found Adaway for an alley-oop dunk to make it 14-13 with 12:10 to go. After a Zip triple, a layup from Ringo cut the deficit to two at 17-15 at the 11:05 mark.

Akron went on a 15-2 run on five 3-point baskets to get its largest lead of the half at 32-17 with 7:07 to go. Back-to-back layups from sophomore guard Nike Sibande and Ringo ended the run, while a layup from redshirt sophomore Precious Ayah cut the deficit to nine at 32-23. A three-pointer from sophomore guard Milos Jovic pulled Miami as close as seven, but the Zips took a 37-27 lead into the break.

A jumper by Harouna and layups from Ringo and sophomore forward Dalonte Brown were part of a 7-0 start to the second half for the 'Hawks that closed them to within three at the 17:57 mark. Akron hit another three-pointer, but a triple by Harouna kept the deficit at three. The teams traded buckets until a three-pointer by Adaway made it 44-40 with 14:00 to go.

The Zips went on a 13-2 run over the next six minutes that gave them their largest lead of the game at 57-42 at the 7:59 mark. Miami was unable to get the lead back under double figures as Akron finished off the 70-58 win.

Brown, Adaway and Abrams each scored six for the RedHawks, while Abrams also brought down 10 rebounds. Miami held a 42-37 rebounding advantage over the Zips. Akron was led by guard Tyler Cheese with 27 points.

The RedHawks remain on the road Tuesday as they travel to Bowling Green. Tip time is 7 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN+.
