
Miami’s Offense Scores Season-High 81 Points in Road Win

The RedHawks beat Western Michigan 81-62 on Saturday.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Miami University women's basketball team (15-4, 6-2 MAC) beat Western Michigan (8-10, 2-5 MAC) by a 81-62 margin on Saturday. Lauren Dickerson and Savannah Kluesner each registered a 20-point game to lead the RedHawks' offense while Kendall McCoy and Leah Purvis also reached double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
This was Miami's highest point-total in a game this season as it shot just over 50 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from long range. The RedHawks wrapped up the game shooting 69.2 percent from the field during the fourth quarter.
The RedHawks started slow as Western Michigan scored the first two baskets of the game to take an early 4-0 lead. Savannah Kluesner got Miami on the board to cut WMU's lead to two points before Dickerson gave the RedHawks their first lead of the game, 5-4, with 6:43 to play in the first quarter.
Western Michigan took a 6-5 lead in response before a three-pointer from Leah Purvis and a jumper from Dickerson opened up a four-point lead for Miami with 5:18 remaining in the first quarter. WMU took the lead back by a 12-10 margin with two-straight three-point shots, to which Dickerson answered with another three herself. A layup from WMU to take a 14-13 lead with 2:24 to play in the first quarter was the last lead Western Michigan would have in the game.
Kennedy Taylor completed a three-point play after being fouled on a spinning layup.
Baskets from Dickerson and Baleigh Reid gave Miami a 20-14 lead after 10 minutes of play, ending the first quarter on a 7-0 run.
McCoy opened the second quarter with a steal as the RedHawks forced Western Michigan to make 11 turnovers over the course of the day, compared to a season-low four turnovers by Miami.
Purvis went 3-of-4 from behind the arc against Western Michigan. With 8:26 left in the second quarter, Purvis extended Miami's lead to 24-15 with one of her three shots from long range.
The RedHawks held a 30-24 lead with 5:33 to play in the second quarter before WMU scored five-straight points to close the gap to one. Miami answered with a basket to hold onto the lead but Western Michigan once again made it a one-point game.
Dickerson had a steal with 2:30 remaining in the first half to help hold off a push from WMU.
Miami made the final two shots of the half to open up a 40-33 lead going into the locker room. Dickerson made a long two-pointer with just five seconds remaining in the half.
The RedHawks sunk the first basket of the second half to earn a double-digit lead for the first time in the game.
Western Michigan answered with an 8-0 run to cut Miami's lead to 43-41 with under seven minutes to play in the third quarter, but McCoy answered with a shot from behind the arc.
Starting with McCoy's three-pointer, Miami put together a 10-3 run to push the lead back up to nine points to lead WMU 53-44 with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets and the RedHawks entered the final quarter of play with a 57-50 lead.
Both teams began the fourth quarter defensively-strong as neither defense allowed any points in the first two minutes of the final quarter. Kluesner was the first player to score for either team in the fourth quarter, giving Miami a nine-point advantage with 7:52 to play.
After Reid sunk a basket with just under seven minutes remaining, WMU scored four-straight points to cut Miami's lead to five points, a 61-56 ball game with six minutes to play.
The RedHawks went on an 18-3 run over the course of five minutes of play to take a game-high 81-60 lead with 30 seconds remaining. Western Michigan capped scored with the final basket of the game as Miami took home the 81-62 victory.
The RedHawks return home to host Eastern Michigan on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. as Miami celebrates National Girls & Women in Sports Day and has a camper reunion.
