Miami Beats Utah Valley 5-2 To Close UNLV Tournament

The RedHawks held off a late rally by UVU.
LAS VEGAS – The Miami University softball team (6-4) wrapped up the UNLV Tournament with a 5-2 win against Utah Valley on Sunday.
Miami 5, Utah Valley 2
Brianna Pratt started the game in the circle for the RedHawks. She pitched four complete innings, striking out four batters and allowing no runs on four hits. Courtney Vierstra replaced Pratt in the circle to start the fifth inning. Vierstra finished the game striking out seven batters in three innings while giving up two runs on three hits.
Utah Valley loaded the bases in the top of the first inning but Miami's defense stood tall to keep the game scoreless.
UVU got runners to scoring position again in the second inning but it was Miami that got onto the scoreboard first. Ashton Slone led off the bottom of the second with a single and Hannah Obrey came into the game to pinch run. Jenny Vasquez hit a single to advance Obrey to second. Kara Leckinger laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Adrianna Barlow scored Obrey to give Miami a 1-0 lead after two innings.
After a three up, three down inning for the Miami defense, the Miami offense increased its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Mackenzie Moore hit a lead-off single but was caught stealing second. Haeley Tran was hit by a pitch followed by singles from Morgan Lott and Johniann Wahl to load the bases with one out. Slone hit her second single of the day to score Tran but Lott was tagged out at home trying to score the extra run.
The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Tran and Lott both hit singles with Tran reaching third on an error by Utah Valley. Wahl reached base on a fielding error that allowed Tran to score and increase Miami's lead to 3-0.
Miami increased its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Barlow hit a one-out home run to make it 4-0. Lily Wilmot followed with a triple before Utah Valley changed pitchers. Moore brought Wilmot home to end the sixth with a 5-0 lead.
Utah Valley cut Miami's lead to 5-2 with a two-run home run with no outs in the top of the seventh but two strikeouts from Vierstra ended the game.
UP AHEAD
Miami travels to Nashville, Tenn. for a tournament at Lipscomb on Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3. The RedHawks will play Appalachian State, Eastern Illinois and the host team, Lipscomb.
