Black History Month - Ron Harper

Throughout the entire month of February MiamiRedHawks.com will be celebrating Black History month by honoring former student-athletes. Today's spotlight is on former men's basketball player Ron Harper.

Harper was a two-time MAC Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986. He is Miami's all-time leader in scoring with 2,377 points and rebounds with 1,119 caroms. Overall he leads the Red and White in nine different career statistical categories.

As a senior Harper was named Second-Team All-American by several press organizations after averaging 24.9 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.3. steals per game. For all of his work, his number 34 was retired at his final home game, the first number retired in Miami history.

Harper was drafted eighth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1986 NBA Draft. He played 17 seasons in NBA for Cleveland (1986-89), LA Clippers (1989-94), Chicago (1994-99) and LA Lakers (1999-01) and was a five-time NBA Champion. Harper averaged 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in NBA career.
