Gordie Green entered Miami’s 100-point club as MU stunned BGSU 4-2 to begin the second half.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – A late first period surge, dominant special teams and a dynamic performance by Miami hockey's go to line delivered it a stunning 4-2 win at No. 11 Bowling Green on Monday night.
The RedHawks (5-10-3) avenged an opening night home loss to the Falcons (12-7-1) in head coach Chris Bergeron's first return to Bowling Green as the Miami's head coach.
The teams traded chances over the first couple shifts with Karch Bachman getting an early look in the slot that Eric Dop steered away. Shortly after a backdoor feed was misfired, MU was whistled for a penalty with 2:45 gone by to put BGSU on the power play. Bowling Green generated some opportunities late on the man advantage off a weird play where players collided with Ryan Larkin, but the senior netminder recovered to make a save and was bailed out by the crossbar on a follow up attempt to allow Miami to kill it off.
Miami got a power play of its own with 8:22 to go in the frame after BG had built an early shot advantage. While the Falcons had the best opportunity of that man advantage as Sam Craggs came in on a breakaway that Ryan Larkin stopped. BGSU got out of the penalty unscathed, but was penalized again with 3:52 remaining in the opening frame. This time, Miami capitalized as Karch Bachman found space down the left wing and threaded a pass to Ryan Savage back door to put MU up 1-0.
Bachman nearly made it 2-0 on the following shift when he got behind the Falcons' defense, but Eric Dop made a pair of saves to leave it a one-goal game. Still, MU was energized by the power play tally and eventually managed to add that second goal as Chase Pletzke found Derek Daschke activating from the left point for a shot that was stopped by Dop. The rebound eventually kicked free in the crease where Christian Mohs crashed in for his second goal of the year to make it a 2-0 contest. Miami took seven of the final nine shots of the opening frame and a late Bowling Green major penalty allowed it to skate into the locker room with a 2-0 lead and a carryover power play.
With nearly four minutes remaining on Bowling Green's major penalty when the puck dropped on the second period, Miami had a chance to go to work offensively. After a couple nondescript minutes, the RedHawks padded their lead thanks to the efforts of Gordie Green. After an errant shot was recovered at the point by Casey Gilling, he flung one toward the goal that Green corralled and worked around Dop before sliding it inside the right post for both his eighth goal of the year and his 100th career point. Bachman also drew an assist as Miami's captain became the 53rd member of Miami's 100-point club.
While the RedHawks were seemingly cruising, the Falcons took advantage of a neutral zone turnover and turned an ensuing odd-man rush into a Sam Craggs goal with 7:09 left in the middle frame.
Two Miami penalties 45 seconds apart gave Bowling Green a 5-on-3 to work with, but MU was able to keep BGSU to the outside and maintain its lead into the latter stages of the frame. With just over a minute left until intermission, Alec Rauhauser got a step down the left wing off a faceoff win and drove the net, but Ryan Larkin stuck with him and got a pad on the close-range chance as Miami's 3-1 lead stood to the break.
The Falcons fired the first five shots of the third period and eventually their pressure paid off when Brandon Kruse found a loose puck near the goal line and scored from in close to cut the RedHawks' lead to 3-2 with 15:41 to play.
After spending the early portion of the third hemmed in its zone, MU was able to generate a couple good looks in transition about six minutes in. Matt Barry slung a pass to the weak side to Jack Clement down low for a close range shot that Dop turned aside. Barry then followed with a one-timer that Dop also flagged down.
Bowling Green continued to press for a tying goal and got a power play chance with just over six minutes to go. Miami's penalty kill was once again equal to the task, holding the Falcons without a shot on goal in another scoreless two minutes.
The RedHawks' defense continued to keep the Falcons from getting to the net down the stretch and as time wore on. BGSU eventually pulled the goalie for an extra skater with under two minutes left, but MU managed to stifle its offensive zone play down and raced the other end as Daschke sent the puck up ice for an odd man rush that Bachman eventually finished on the empty net with 1:28 to go to seal the road win.
Bowling Green outshot Miami by a 37-31 count, including 14-8 in the third period, but MU held BGSU without a shot on goal for the final 6:09, a stretch that began with a Bowling Green power play. The RedHawks' special teams keyed the victory as they finished 2-for-5 on the power play and killed off all five Falcons' man advantages, including an extended 5-on-3. Larkin was sturdy in net, stopped 35 shots. Green and Bachman tallied identical three-point nights on a goal and two assists each while Daschke dished out two helpers for a multi-point game.
Miami plays exclusively National Collegiate Hockey Conference opponents for the remainder of its regular season, beginning with a Jan. 10-11 series at Colorado College.

We've seen a lot of this out of @gordie_green as his 100th career point puts us up 3-0!
