SIBANDE CLOSING IN ON TOP 20: After finishing only one point short of his career high with 28 points against Evansville last Saturday, senior guard
Nike Sibande moved into 27th place in Miami's all-time scoring list with 1,180 points. He can really start shooting up the list quickly as he is now only 50 points from joining the top 20. On the way he would pass Fred Foster (26th; 1,183 points), Jim Paul (25th; 1,191), Randy Ayers (24th; 1,203), Chuck Goodyear (23rd; 1,212) and Geovonie McKnight (22nd; 1,215). At 1,230 points, he would join what is currently a three-way tie for 19th between Danny Horace, Chet Mason and Rick Goins.
MCNAMARA STEPS UP: With the RedHawks injury problems this season and more specifically foul trouble in their last game against Evansville, it has provided a bigger opportunity for sophomore forward
Elijah McNamara to make an impact. Against the Purple Aces, he finished with a career-high 10 points in 22 minutes of action. He was 5-for-6 from the field.
REDHAWKS VS. HBCUs: This is the third of four contests Miami has taken on one of the historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Previously the RedHawks defeated Alabama A&M on Nov. 16 and Central State on Nov. 20. Miami will face Wilberforce on Dec. 30.
ABOUT MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE: The Delta Devils are 1-8 on the season. They have played every game except one on the road, which was their only victory, 124-70 over North American on Nov. 30. In their last game, Mississippi Valley State fell to Missouri State, 86-62. After allowing over 110 points in each of their first three games, the Delta Devils have held their last five opponents in a row under 90. MVSU has been led by senior guard Michael Green. He is averaging 20.1 points per game.
THE SERIES WITH MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE: This is the first ever meeting between Miami and Mississippi Valley State.
MIAMI VS. SWAC: The Southwestern Athletic Conference is one of two Division I conference made up entirely of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The SWAC consists of 10 schools all located in the South. Given the distance between Miami and these schools, the RedHawks have limited history playing this conference. Miami is 4-1 all-time against current members of the SWAC. It is 1-0 vs. Jackson State, 2-0 vs. Grambling State, 1-0 vs. Alabama A&M and 0-1 vs. Texas Southern. In addition to Mississippi Valley State, the RedHawks have never faced Alabama State, Alcorn State, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Prairie View A&M or Southern.
UP AHEAD: The RedHawks have a big challenge ahead of them as they hit the road to take on current number one ranked team Louisville on Wednesday. While the Cardinals will probably drop in rankings after losing their first game this week, they are still likely to be ranked in the top five when they face off against Miami. The game will tip at 8:30 p.m. and it will air live nationally on the ACC Network. An audio broadcast will be available on the Miami Sports Network from Van Wagner.
