Both the senior and collegiate programs debuted their free skate programs on Saturday.
MENTOR, Ohio – Opening weekend concluded with both Miami's senior and collegiate synchronized skating programs debuting their free skates at the Diamond Classic on Saturday.
The RedHawks' collegiate squad made their season debut with a bang, dominating the three-team field with a total of 89.00. That score was over 15 points ahead of their season debut at this event a year ago. Miami's component score yielded 45.74 with a 44.26 element score adding up to the strong team total.
On the senior side, MU had a couple deductions in its first scored free skate, which netted it a score of 90.88 and finished second to Adrian. Miami's component score yielded 51.59 while it claimed a 41.29 element score.
"I think we had an excellent short program skate yesterday," head coach Carla DeGirolamo said. "They were in the moment and smooth and fast. We were a bit sloppy in today's free skate and had some technical errors that need to be cleaned up before we go to California. Coming into competition for the first time I felt they did a great job. We have a lot of room to grow and improve and this is a good start.
"Collegiate had an excellent skate. We have 10 rookies on the team so we got a chance to see what we have, which is a great group. They came out dynamic and had a lot of energy. This was a solid first score and we look forward to continuing to improve from there."
Miami's senior team returns to the ice next weekend when it heads to the California Cup in Irvine, Calif. That competition runs on Friday and Saturday. The RedHawks' collegiate team is next in action at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic (Dec. 6-8). Both teams also have exhibitions during Miami hockey's home series against Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 15 and 16.
