Miami Wins First-Ever NCAA Field Hockey Game in Texas

The RedHawks beat Towson 5-2 on Thursday.

HOUSTON, Tex. – The Miami University field hockey team (7-4, 2-0 MAC) beat Towson by a 5-2 margin on Thursday as the two teams played the first-ever NCAA field hockey game in Texas.

Taylor Curran opened scoring with her second of the season during the 12th minute of play. Kirsten McNeil recorded the assist as Curran scored from right in front of the cage.

Leonor Berlie scored her fifth of the season and first of the game just two minutes later to give Miami a 2-0 lead after one quarter of play.

With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Lexie Nugent scored her first goal of the season to increase the RedHawks lead to 3-0 at halftime. Allie Grace Joyner picked up the assist.

Miami did not allow a shot nor a penalty corner during the first half of play.

Towson got onto the scoreboard during the 36th minute of play but Miami answered with a second goal from Berlie just one minute later. Berlie's goal came on a penalty corner opportunity from Joyner.

The Tigers scored their second and final goal on their first penalty corner of the game to close the third quarter with the 'Hawks leading 4-2.

Berlie completed her hat trick midway through the fourth quarter on another penalty corner feed. McNeil and Marie Görner assisted.

Berlie led the Miami offense with three goals and led all players with 11 shots and eight shots on goal. The RedHawks led the game in shots (16-4), shots on goal (11-4) and penalty corners (17-2).

Miami returns home to host No. 20 Wake Forest on Sunday at noon for the annual pride game.
