Miami Wins Shootout Thriller Against UC Davis

The RedHawks win marks Iñako Puzo’s 100th win at Miami.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team (10-7, 4-1 MAC) beat UC Davis in a shootout on Sunday by a 2-1 margin on Myaamia Heritage Day. For more information on the Myaamia Tribe, go to www.MiamiOH.edu/MTR.

Miami started quickly, earning a penalty corner in the first minute of play. After saves on the first two resulting shots from Kirsten McNeil and Marie Görner, Neely Lochmoeller scored her first goal of the season by tipping the ball out of the air twice and into the cage.

The RedHawks put together another sequence of three-straight shots in the fourth minute of play before earning a second penalty corner but neither resulting shot made it into the cage.

After one quarter, Miami had a 9-0 lead in shots and all three penalty corners in the contest.

The first shot of the second quarter didn't come until midway through the quarter as McNeil sent one wide.

UC Davis earned its first penalty corner in the 26th minute of play, putting the resulting shot wide.

Mia Gordon closed the second quarter with a shot on goal as Miami took a 1-0 lead into the half and a 12-1 advantage in shots.

UC Davis evened the score in the 34th minute on the only shot of the third quarter after getting around Isabelle Perese.

The Aggies earned back-to-back penalty corners to start the fourth quarter but a save from Perese and a block in front kept the game tied.

Miami gained momentum with four penalty corners midway through the fourth quarter but the teams remained tied at one at the end of regulation. After 60 minutes of play, Miami had the 18-4 lead in shots and the 7-3 lead in penalty corners.

The RedHawks took all five shots in the first overtime and earned three penalty corners but Miami was unable to score and the game required a second overtime.
Each team recorded four shots and earned two penalty corner chances in the second overtime but Miami went to a shootout in its second-straight game.

In the shootout, each team capitalized in the first round with Devi Slobbe shooting for Miami. Görner put Miami up 2-1 in the third round after Perese made two stops. UC Davis evened the score at two in the fourth round. After the Aggies took a 3-2 lead in the fifth round, Noor Breedijk earned a penalty stroke on her attempt. Leonor Berlie converted the penalty stroke to force a sixth round. Görner once again put the ball in the cage and gave Miami the lead. Perese stopped the final attempt from UC Davis to win the game.

As a team, Miami outshot UC Davis 27-8 with Berlie and Allie Grace Joyner each taking a game-high five shots. The RedHawks led in shots on goal 14-4 and penalty corners 12-5. Perese made three saves during field play.

Miami wraps up the regular season against Central Michigan on Saturday at 11 a.m. with senior and alumnae day.
