HAMILTON, N.Y. – Entering the third period down 3-1, the Miami hockey team came out with an early flurry as it rallied to tie Colgate 3-3 in its first road game of the season on Friday.
Gordie Green assisted on all three RedHawk (1-3-2) goals as they battled back from the two-goal hole.
Despite some early pressure from Miami, it was Colgate (1-3-2) who was opportunistic in getting on the board at the 7:11 mark. The Raiders converted a 2-on-1 rush as Paul McAvoy put the puck in out front at the end of the feed to make it a 1-0 contest. That lead would be short lived, however, as
Jack Clement moved up from the point and was set up in the high slot by Green, where the freshman blue liner buried a wrist shot for his first collegiate goal.
Casey Gilling also drew an assist on the tally.
The Red & White got a power play opportunity shortly thereafter that allowed them to race out to a 6-1 shot advantage, but they were unable to Mitch Benson a second time. As the period wore on, Colgate started to get some more time in the offensive zone. With 2:43 left in the frame, the Raiders went back in front by winning a faceoff in the offensive zone and Ben Sharf scored on a feed right atop the crease to give them a 2-1 lead at intermission.
Miami began the second period with immense pressure, playing for a solid minute in the Colgate zone with an extra skater due to a delayed penalty. The ensuing power play saw some opportunities created, in particular with a redirect by
John Sladic that Mitch Benson shrugged off as MU fired the first seven shots of the frame. Despite those opportunities, none of the pucks got into the net.
Colgate's first chance of the second period came on a transition rush that
Ben Kraws had to be sharp on to get the pad across. The play also ended with a minor on Miami, but it managed to kill off the man advantage with little difficulty.
The Raiders eventually added to their lead after a redirected point shot left a loose puck near the crease and McAvoy jammed the puck home for his second of the night to send the RedHawks to the dressing room down 3-1.
It did not take long for the comeback to start for the Red & White as
Karch Bachman struck 35 seconds into the frame as Green found him from beneath the goal line at the left wing, where he fired home his fourth goal of the season to cut the deficit to 3-2.
A transition rush allowed the RedHawks to tie the contest as Green found
Derek Daschke streaking down the left wing, where he picked the far corner for his first goal of the year to even the score at 3-3 at the 2:47 mark. Gilling also drew his second assist of the night on that tally.
Colgate went on the power play with 12:03 remaining, but Miami's special teams kept the game tied up. Miami kept putting on pressure at the offensive end and Green had a chance to give MU its first lead when he was fed all alone in front, but Benson got a pad down on his backhand shot to leave it a tie game.
The Raiders got one more opportunity with a man advantage with just over two minutes remaining, but the RedHawks once again held them at bay to send the contest to overtime. In the extra five minutes, both teams got one shot on goal as the contest finally ended in a tie.
Miami ended up with a 28-20 advantage in shots for the night. Neither power play connected as MU went 0-for-2 and CU was 0-for-3. Green picked up his first multi-point game since his four-point opening night with three assists while Gilling also chipped in two helpers. Kraws finished the night with 17 saves in net for Miami.
These teams wrap up their weekend series on Saturday with a 4 p.m. matinee opening faceoff.
