Western Michigan scored a pair of goals late in the second half to top Miami 2-0.
OXFORD, Ohio – Despite a promising first half of play, a pair of late Western Michigan goals sent the Miami soccer team to a 2-0 setback on Thursday afternoon.
The Broncos (5-6-1, 3-1-1 Mid-American) struck twice in a 1:44 span late in the half to send the RedHawks (3-9, 2-3 MAC) to the setback.
After a non-descript first 10 minutes of play, Western Michigan got the first extended pressure on goal, jumping out to a 6-1 shot advantage. Izzie Vaccari made some strong stops on Bailey Korhorn on a 20-yard bid that the sophomore goalkeeper leaped to punch over the net and then again off a header on the ensuing corner kick.
The RedHawks eventually closed the shot gap to a 6-6 count and had a couple strong bids of their own. Elle Gill nearly put MU on top in the 31st minute when Jordan King's corner kick service found her head for a bid that went past Maggie Rogers, but rang off the post to leave it scoreless. WMU fired the final four shots of the half, but the teams remained deadlocked 0-0 at the break.
With the contest still scoreless, Vaccari continued her strong game in net by making three more saves. She added to the highlight reel in the 68th minute with yet another leaping stop on a Korhorn bid. Miami tried to put one on the board on its end as Olivia Winnett launched a tricky shot from outside the 18 in the 64th minute, but Rogers tracked that one down.
WMU got on the board in the 72nd minute when Morgan Otteson got fed by Korhorn just atop the 18 for a low shot that slid inside the left post to make it a 1-0 match. It took less than two minutes for the Broncos to add to their lead as one of their shots hit a RedHawk defender and redirected in for an own goal. MU was unable to generate any shots down the stretch as WMU secured the shutout.
Western Michigan outshot Miami 17-9 on the day and had a slim (6-5) lead in corner kicks. Vaccari finished the day with seven saves for Miami in net.
The RedHawks play their next three matches on the road, beginning on Sunday at Northern Illinois. Opening kick is at 3 p.m.
