Miami netted three third-period goals to tie No. 10 Providence.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Twenty minutes away from suffering its first sweep of the season, the No. 16 Miami hockey team showed resolve in rallying for a 3-3 tie at No. 10 Providence on Saturday night.
Miami (9-7-4) scored three times in the final regulation frame to erase a 2-0 deficit at the start of the frame.
Providence (12-4-4) used its first power play of the game to draw first blood on the scoreboard when Scott Conway redirected a Spenser Young point shot home at the 5:35 mark. PC jumped out to a 7-2 start in terms of shots on goal, but MU battled back and generated some chances of its own.
After trading brief power plays in a penalty marred first period, the RedHawks got set up in the offensive zone with a dangerous man advantage that generated quite a few clean looks at Hayden Hawkey, but he steered those attempts away. PC finished the frame with a 10-8 shot advantage as the Red & White trailed by a goal after the opening frame.
The Red & White got another power play in the second period and generated a few quality shots that Hawkey stopped. A Friar power play led to another Conway deflection goal as they took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.
Facing its first sweep of the season, the RedHawks dug deep and appeared to be right back in the game when they got an early power play. Dogged work by Grant Hutton below the goal line worked the puck to Jonathan Gruden below the right circle. Gruden fended off a check and dished the puck across for a back door feed to Ryan Siroky, who netted a goal for the second-straight night to cut the gap to 2-1 at the 5:58 mark.
That momentum was short lived, however, as Bryan Lemos cashed in on a turnover in front of the net 13 seconds later to put PC back ahead by a pair at 3-1.
With time winding down, Miami got the break it needed to claw back within a goal. After the puck was cycled down the right wall. Christian Mohs gathered the puck at the point and flung a shot that hit a Providence skater in front and deflected past Hawkey for his first collegiate goal. Alec Mahalak and Siroky both picked up assists on the tally that made it 3-2 with 5:21 to go.
As the clock continued to tick down, MU pulled Ryan Larkin for a sixth skater down the stretch. Miami had a pair of chances in the early going of 6-on-5 play that did not connect. However, a pair of cross ice feeds ended up tying things as Hutton got the puck to Josh Melnick above the right circle and he threaded a feed to Gordie Green for a one-timer in the slot that evened it up with 41.2 seconds to go. Green's seventh goal of the season left the score tied up with Melnick's helper representing his 100th career point as Miami sent the contest to overtime.
Seeing their lead evaporate, Providence poured on pressure in the extra session, outshooting Miami 4-1. Larkin stood tall throughout the surge as Miami picked up its fourth tie in the past six games.
The Friars finished with a slight (34-30) edge in shots. PC also went 2-for-4 on the power play compared to MU's 1-for-7 mark with the man advantage. Siroky (1g, 1a) had his first career multi-point game while Hutton dished out two assists. Larkin finished with 31 saves on 34 shots while Hawkey turned away 27 shots in the other crease.
Miami resumes National Collegiate Hockey Conference play at Western Michigan on Friday. Opening faceoff is at 7 p.m. and the game is televised nationally on CBSSN.
