Miami Falls in Four Sets to Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The Miami University volleyball team came out and captured set one against Dayton, but fell in the final three sets as it dropped a 1-3 (25-17, 19-25, 18-25, 21-25) on Tuesday evening. The RedHawks fall to 5-2 on the season, while the Flyers improve to 5-2.

Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Wojick led Miami with 10 kills and a .368 attack percentage. Junior middle hitter Margaret Payne came up big defensively with seven blocks (two solo and five assisted).

"Tonight's loss was full of small victories," said head coach Carolyn Condit. "Against a very fine opponent we saw improvement in our blocking and defensive game. We tied Dayton in service aces and were within a point of meeting its total blocks and digs. Margaret and Sarah really stepped up their game tonight. I am very proud of the youngest lineup we have played so far, and look forward to this weekend's competition."

A block from junior middle hitter Margaret Payne and Wojick got Miami off on the right foot to begin set one. Tied at five, freshman right side hitter Sophie Riemersma put down three kills as part of a 7-3 run that put the RedHawks on top 12-8. The teams traded points until a kill from freshman middle hitter Corinne Jemison off an assist from freshman setter Jennifer Schulze and a service ace by freshman outside hitter Gaby Harper made it 18-12 and forced a Flyer timeout. Miami continued the pressure out of the break as Harper and junior right side hitter Haley Stewart each had aces as part of a 6-2 run that made it 24-14. Dayton was able to score next three, but a kill from Wojick off an assist from sophomore setter Morgan Seaman gave the 'Hawks a 25-17 victory.

Dayton jumped to an 11-3 lead to begin set two. Miami slowly fought back into it, cutting the deficit to 11-15. A 4-0 run put the advantage back at eight at 19-11. Harper, Payne and Stewart each had kills as the RedHawks did not give up, but the Flyers were eventually able to put away a 25-19 win.

Miami fell behind 3-7 to begin set three. A kill from Jemison and a solo block by Payne were part of a 7-3 answer by the RedHawks that tied the score at 10. Payne had two more blocks as Miami took a 12-11 lead. At that point a 9-3 run by Dayton put it in control at 20-15. Wojick had a kill and a block to get the Red and White as close as four points, but three straight from the Flyers gave it a 25-18 victory.

Set four started off much better for Miami as Wojick, Payne, Stewart and Harper each had kills to help the RedHawks take a 7-3 advantage. Dayton closed to within two, but a kill and a service ace from Seaman, along with another kill from Wojick made it 12-7, Miami. Trailing 9-14, the Flyers went on a 6-1 run to tie the score at 15. The teams traded the next 10 points to create a 20-20 tie. A block from UD gave it the lead, but Riemersma answered with a kill to tie the score at 21. The Flyers then scored the next four to take a 25-21 victory and a 3-1 win in the match.

Riemersma finished with seven kills for Miami, while Payne and Jemison each had six. Junior libero Taylor Daignault recorded 14 digs, while Seaman had a team-high 19 assists.

The RedHawks return to action on Friday when they take on Chattanooga to open the Holiday Inn – University Plaza Invitational at 4:30 p.m. (EDT).
