BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Miami University volleyball team got a trio of strong offensive performances as it took a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18) win over Chattanooga to open play the Holiday Inn – University Plaza Invitational on Friday. The RedHawks improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Mocs fall to 4-5.
Miami only made 12 attack errors the entire match and hit .302 as a team. It was led by freshman outside hitter Gaby Harper who had 12 kills against only one error for a .458 attack percentage. Senior right side hitter Stela Kukoc also had 12 kills against two errors for a .400 attack percentage. Right behind them was freshman middle hitter Corinne Jemison with a career-high 11 kills. She had a .444 attack percentage for the match.
Kukoc had a kill and a service ace to help Miami jump to a 5-3 lead to begin set one. A 7-3 run by Chattanooga put it in front 10-8, but a kill from junior middle hitter Margaret Payne and another service ace by Kukoc tied the score at 10. Tied at 13, freshman setter Louise Comerford took over, putting down two service aces and finding fellow freshman Jemison for a kill. The Mocs tied the score at 16, but a kill from Jemison and two service aces by Harper capped off a 5-0 run that put the RedHawks in control. They maintained that advantage the rest of the way as a kill from Kukoc finished off a 25-20 victory.
Neither team could build an advantage of more than two points for the majority of set two. Trailing 14-16, Chattanooga went on a 4-0 run to take an 18-16 lead and force Miami to use a timeout. Out of the break, the teams traded side outs until a UTC service error cut the RedHawk deficit to one at 19-20. From there a block by Jemison and junior right side hitter Haley Stewart, along with kills from Harper and Jemison were part of a 6-0 run that gave Miami set point. The Mocs scored next, but hit a service error to give the Red and White a 25-21 win.
A pair of kills by Kukoc off assists from sophomore setter Morgan Seaman helped Miami take control of set three at 10-6. The Mocs fought back to tie the score at 13. The teams traded side outs until it was tied at 17. At that point a kill from Payne and another service ace by Comerford started an 8-1 closing run that gave Miami a 25-18 win and a 3-0 victory in the match.
"This was a good first win this weekend," said head coach Carolyn Condit. "Setters distributed the ball well, and Stela, Gaby and Corinne were hard to stop. We need stronger defense and blocking tomorrow to play our best."
The RedHawks had eight service aces in the contest. Comerford and Harper recorded three each, with Kukoc putting down the other two. Seaman led Miami with 18 assists, while sophomore libero Abigail Huser had 11 digs.
Miami concludes play at the Holiday Inn – University Plaza Invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday. The RedHawks will take on Notre Dame at 10:30 a.m. (EDT) and finish up with host Western Kentucky at 3:30 p.m. (EDT).
