Field Hockey Takes Down No. 22 Ohio State

The RedHawks limited the Buckeyes to just two shots on goal.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team beat No. 22 Ohio State on Sunday by a 2-1 margin. The RedHawks improve to 5-4 on the season while the Buckeyes fall to 4-4.

"Today's game was an example of what we can do when we play together," said Estel Roig. "Everyone played well and supported each other, from Mariona and Maddie in the back, to the forwards who rotated through all game. This was a win for all Miami."

"Today was a total team effort," said Mariona Heras. "We made an individual commitment to the team, and each person played to their maximum capability. Even for the times they kept attacking, we held our ground and never gave up on ourselves and on each other."

The Buckeyes struck first with a goal on a penalty corner just two minutes into the game.

Allie Grace Joyner tied the game in the 22nd minute of play with a breakaway goal, her second goal of the weekend and third of the season. Paula Portugal picked up the assist, her third of the season.

The two teams combined for just six shots in the first half.

The RedHawks earned the first penalty corner of the second half in the 41st minute of play but the resulting shot from Heras was turned aside. Miami followed up with two shots on goal from Paula Portugal but those were saved by the Buckeye goalkeeper as well.

After Ohio State took a timeout in the 52nd minute of play, Miami came back to earn a penalty corner in the 55th minute. Kirsten McNeil gave the RedHawks their first lead of the game with her second goal of the season, a tip-in from Marie-Claire Gorner. This was Gorner's third assist of the season.

The Buckeyes were unable to capitalize on their lone penalty corner opportunity of the second half as the resulting shot is blocked during the 63rd minute.

Ohio State pulled its goalkeeper with over five minutes remaining in the game. In the final four minutes, Miami withstood three Buckeye shots, including a clutch save from Maddie Passarella to ensure a RedHawks victory.

Five different players took shots for Miami. Maddie Passarella made one save as the RedHawks defensive front limited the Buckeyes to only two shots on goal.

Miami returns home to host conference rival Kent State next Saturday at noon.
