OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team shutout Kent State by a 3-0 margin on Saturday. The RedHawks improve to 6-4 on the season while the Golden Flashes fall to 2-8.
Miami took control of the beginning of the game, getting two shots on goal and a penalty corner within the first three minutes of play. The RedHawks did not allow Kent State get a penalty corner opportunity until 10 minutes into the game.
In the 24
th minute of play, Miami earned its second penalty corner of the game.
Estel Roig tipped in her second goal of the season.
Leonor Berlie picked up the assist as she is the one who took the shot.
The RedHawks took the 1-0 lead into halftime, also leading 7-1 in shots and 5-0 in shots on goal.
In the 45
th minute of play,
Mariona Heras took a shot on a penalty corner opportunity that beat the Kent State goalkeeper but was stopped by one of the defensive players. The game remained 1-0.
The RedHawks capitalized on their next penalty corner opportunity to increase the lead to 2-0. In the 49
th minute of play,
Paula Portugal netted her eighth of the season.
Kirsten McNeil inserted the ball and
Kendall Hunker stopped it before Portugal scored.
Miami took a flurry of three shots during the 55
th minute of play but the Kent State goalkeeper did not let another one by.
With just over 15 minutes to play, Portugal scored her second of the day and ninth of the season – unassisted. Portugal dribbled the ball up the middle of the field into the circle and beat the Kent State goalkeeper with a clean backhand shot to the left side of the goal.
Kent State called a timeout. Just a minute after this timeout, the Golden Flashes earned a penalty corner and took a shot that was saved by
Marie-Claire Gorner.
Miami led the game 16-2 in shots, 11-1 in shots on goal and 5-3 in penalty corners. Portugal led both teams with eight shots.
Maddie Passarella earned her fourth shutout of the season.
The RedHawks host Indiana on Sunday at 2 p.m. for International Student Appreciation Day.
