Ohio Edges Miami in MAC Tournament Opener

AKRON, Ohio - The Miami University softball team was edged out by Ohio in its first game of the 2018 MAC Tournament by a 1-0 margin. The RedHawks will face Western Michigan at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. Miami now holds an even 24-24 record on the season.
Ohio 1, Miami 0
Courtney Vierstra pitched the complete game for the RedHawks. Vierstra gave up one run on only three hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
Haeley Tran singled in the top of the first inning for the first hit of the ball game and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ashton Slone walked. Tran and Slone were stranded on second and first, respectively. Morgan Lott tripled in the second inning but did not make it home.
Vierstra and the Miami defense retired seven-straight Ohio batters from the first through third inning. Slone walked again in the third inning.
In the fourth inning, Kaitlyn Gliha hit a two-out double.
Ohio scored its run in the fourth inning on a double, followed by a long single.
Slone led off the sixth inning with a base hit. Hannah Obrey pinch ran for Slone but was left on second after advancing on a sacrifice bunt from Kat Lee.
Vierstra and the Miami defense forced Ohio to go three up, three down in both the fifth and sixth inning. Slone led the Miami offense with a 1.000 on-base percentage (single, 2 BB).
