OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami baseball team collected its sixth win in its last seven outings as it topped Ball State, 5-3, Tuesday evening in a non-conference midweek matchup.
The RedHawks (29-16, 13-8 MAC) got off to a quick start with single runs in the first and second innings. MU did it with some two-out hitting in the first when Landon Stephens doubled to left and scored on a Kyle Winkler base hit. In the home half of the second, after the Cardinals evened things up in the top half, Dallas Hall blasted a solo shot to left center to make it 2-1 in favor of the Red & White.
Miami added to its advantage in the fourth, striking for a trio of runs. Hall and T.J. Galenti worked walks to put two on. Spencer Dull then roped a single to center, plating Hall. An error on the throw back into the infield allowed Galenti and Dull to take third and second base, respectively. Two batters later, Cristian Tejada poked one through the right side, bringing home both Galenti and Dull to make it 5-1.
Ball State (26-21, 13-8 MAC) promptly cut the advantage in half with a two-run homer in top half of the fifth to make it 5-3 Miami and that's where the score would stay.
Jay Wilson got the start on the hill for the `Hawks. The redshirt freshman went five innings and allowed three runs on three hits. He also struck out three in picking up the win and moves to 2-1 on the season. Michael Hendricks and Cole Gnetz each tossed a scoreless inning in relief while Jack Corbell pitched the eighth and ninth innings to notch his second save of 2018.
Miami remains home for the weekend and welcomes Central Michigan to town for a three-game series that is set to begin on Friday at 5 p.m.
