Miami Falls To Western Michigan

AKRON, Ohio - The Miami University softball team fell to Western Michigan by a 4-1 margin in its second game of the 2018 MAC Tournament. The RedHawks finish the season with a 24-25 record.

Courtney Vierstra started the game for Miami in the circle. Vierstra pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks. Vierstra struck out one batter.
Shannon Hohman replaced Vierstra in the circle in the middle of the fourth inning and finished the game. Hohman gave up no runs, hits or walks while striking out three.
Ashton Slone was the first base runner of the game, garnering a two-out walk in the top of the first inning. Slone was stranded on base.
Kat Lee led off the second inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kaitlyn Gliha.
Western Michigan scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a walk, a double, a single and a fielding error.
Mackenzie Moore hit a lead-off single in the third inning but was out on a fielder's choice from Megan Wurts' bat.
Slone reached base on a fielding error to start the fourth inning. Hannah Obrey pinch ran for Slone. Obrey advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Johniann Wahl. Lee hit her second single of the day to move Obrey to third base. With two outs, Kara Leckinger pinch hit for Morgan Lott. Leckinger singled to score Obrey from third. Rylee Whispel followed with a single to load the bases, but Miami could not do more damage.
Western Michigan scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-1 ball game. The first run was a lead-off solo shot. The second run was scored on a pair of singles and a double.
Miami got two more on base in the fifth. Haeley Tran singled but was out a fielder's choice play that left Slone safe on first. Wahl hit a single as well.
Hohman put down six-straight Western Michigan batters in the fifth and sixth innings.
Gliha walked to lead off the sixth inning but a pair of fielder's choice plays only gave Miami one on base.
Slone walked again in the seventh but could not score.
