OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami baseball team cruised to a 7-2 win over rival Cincinnati Tuesday evening at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The RedHawks blasted three home runs to pace themselves to their third-straight victory.
Miami's record jumps to 26-15 on the year while the Bearcats drop to 22-20.
The RedHawks flexed their power bats early, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind solo shots by Ross Haffey and Landon Stephens.
A Bearcat RBI single in the top of the second cut the Miami advantage in half but the Red & white regained their two-run edge in the home half of the frame. Cal Elvers started the inning off with a single through the left side and got to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Winkler. Following a pop-up, Elvers was driven in courtesy of a Spencer Dull seeing-eye single into left.
The RedHawks widened their lead to 4-1 with another tally in the third, a leadoff solo shot by Hayden Senger.
No runs crossed the plate in the fourth or fifth innings but Miami would add single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth frames. In the sixth, Jordan Stephens got the `Hawks a two-out baserunner when he singled and ultimately took third on a throwing error by the UC left fielder bringing the ball back into the infield. Dull made the error hurt when he followed with an RBI single up the middle as Jordan Stephens scored. In the seventh, Will Vogelgesang and T.J. Galenti singled to put runners on the corners for Kyle Winkler, who put down a safety squeeze bunt to make it 6-1. The RedHawks scored one final time in the eighth when Dallas Hall walked, stole second, got to third on a passed ball and tagged and scored on a Senger sacrifice fly.
The Bearcats managed to score a single run in the top of the ninth to make it 7-2 but the RedHawks held on to collect their third-straight victory.
Starting pitcher Jay Wilson went four-plus innings and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out six. Cole Gnetz, Bailey Martin, Jacob Banks and Michael Hendricks all turned in scoreless efforts in relief.
Miami now turns its attention to Western Michigan as they take on the Broncos in Kalamazoo, Mich. this weekend for a three-game set.
