
Miami Splits Doubleheader at EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Miami University softball team lost the series at Eastern Michigan two games to one. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the RedHawks fell by a 8-2 margin. In the second game, Miami won 6-2.

Shannon Hohman started the game in the circle for the RedHawks. Hohman went 2.1 innings and gave up four runs on four hits, while striking out one and walking two.
Taylor Rathe replaced Hohman in the bottom of the third inning. Rathe went 3.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits while striking out five batters and walking four.
Miami took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Megan Wurts and Haeley Tran both walked. With two outs and runners on first and second, Kat Lee hit a double that brought Wurts around.
Eastern Michigan took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of one - a lead that would not be relinquished. A single, reach on fielder's choice and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out. Two singles and a sacrifice fly brought three runs in to score.
Wurts cut Eastern Michigan's lead in half with a solo home run in the third inning, her fourth of the season and second of the weekend.
Eastern Michigan scored four runs in the third. After a solo homer and two hits, Rathe came into the game for Hohman in the circle. Rathe walked the first batter she faced to load the bases. Two singles and a hit-by-pitch each drove in one run.
Lee responded with a lead-off single but a double play saw her out and the inning over.
The final run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch.
Kara Leckinger led off with a single in the fifth but was stranded on first.
Ashton Slone led off with a single in the sixth and Kaitlyn Gliha was walked but the inning ended before any runs could score.
Lizzie Bollinger pinch hit for Mackenzie Moore in the top of the seventh and reached base with a walk but was stranded.
Wurts (homerun, RBI, BB, stolen base) and Lee (double, RBI, single) each reached base twice for the RedHawks.
Miami 6, EMU 2
Courtney Vierstra pitched her tenth complete game of the season. In her nine innings pitched, Vierstra gave up only one earned run and three hits while striking out nine batters.
In the top of the first, Tran singled but was out on a double play to end the inning.
Miami scored first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Johniann Wahl led off with a single and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. Gliha drove Wahl home with a sacrifice fly.
Eastern Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo home run.
The RedHawks left runners on second and third in the top of the third inning. Moore and Wurts both singled and advanced on a passed ball.
Eastern Michigan took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Two batters reached base on error and a third was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly drove one run in before Vierstra forced two consecutive groundouts to close the inning.
Miami scored five runs by batting around in the top of the fifth inning to put the game away. Lizzie Bollinger led off with a walk. Morgan Lott reached base on an error that saw her advance to second and Bollinger to third. Moore hit a double that brought Bollinger home. Wurts singled to bring Lott around. Tran hit a single to score Moore. Slone doubled to score both Wurts and Tran. Leckinger pinch ran for Slone but was tagged out at home on a double from Lee.
Lott singled in the top of the sixth but was caught stealing to end any scoring threat.
All nine batters either reached base or earned an RBI. Wurts (two singles), Tran (two singles) and Moore (double, single) led the RedHawks with two hits apiece. Slone led the team with two RBI's.
